DVD Sales: Games Go Into Overtime

It was a bad week for new releases, at least in terms of quality. How bad? The Hunger Games was able to return to first place on the DVD sales chart. It sold an additional 256,000 units / $5.11 million over the week for a total of 5.38 million units / $93.21 million. It has now sold more units than any other DVD in 2012, but it is still a little behind Breaking Dawn, Part 1 in terms of revenue.
The Lucky One slipped to second place with 168,000 units / $2.51 million over the week for totals of 683,000 units / $10.22 million after two. Safe was the best new release, but it only managed third place with 149,000 units / $2.53 million. Then again, this is actually relatively better than its theatrical run. Battleship remained in fourth place 138,000 units / $2.76 million for the week and 510,000 units / $9.14 million after two. This is a terrible result for a film that cost most than $200 million to make. The studio is lucky it was a much, much bigger hit internationally. Think Like a Man fell to fifth place with 129,000 units / $2.38 million for the week. After two weeks of release, the film has sold 546,000 units and generated $9.47 million in total sales. For a film that made relatively close to $100 million in theaters, this is a weak home market run.
The Five-Year Engagement only managed seventh place in its debut with 106,000 units / $1.80 million. It missed expectations at the box office and it is doing the same on the home market. There were five more new releases to chart, all of them TV on DVD releases. Grey's Anatomy: Season Eight earned ninth place with 89,000 units / $2.66 million. Fringe: Season Four just missed the top ten with 76,000 units / $2.29 million, while Criminal Minds: Season Seven was right behind with 56,000 units / $1.50 million. The penultimate season of The Office, Season Eight, earned 15th place with 44,000 / $1.09 million. Person of Interest: Season One debuted in 20th place with 31,000 units / $941,000.
