The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 2 held firm in first place with $104.21 million on 12,818 screens in 73 markets for a two-week total of $365.46 million intentionally and $592.83 million worldwide. By this time next week, it should be the biggest hit in the franchise. This past weekend, the film opened in Germany earning first place with $12.82 million on 765 screens for a total opening of $16.67 million. Its best holdover was in the U.K. where it made $8.56 million on 559 screens over the weekend for a total of $43.22 million. This is a strong result, but it was down 66%, which is troubling. It was better in Russia down 62% to $8.30 million on 1,380 screens for a total of $36.28 million after two. A 62% decline is actually average for the market, more or less. The film has very few markets left to open in, but it is already profitable, so the studio should be very happy.
Skyfall remained in second place with $45.64 million on 8,033 screens in 60 markets for an international total of $571.42 million and a worldwide total of $792.56 million. It was already the biggest hit in the franchise and the only question is how far up the all time chart it can climb. A top 30 finish is virtually guaranteed, while a top 20 finish is almost as likely. Speaking of all time charts, the film is closing in on Avatar on the U.K. all time chart with $143.55 million, including $6.10 million on 550 screens this past weekend. It should become number one, perhaps as early as this coming weekend.
Life of Pi opened in third place with $23.87 million on 5,483 screens in 5 markets. It opened in China and India, which are the two biggest markets where numbers are still unreliable. It earned an estimated $16.1 million on 4,500 screens in the former and $3.6 million on 647 screens in the latter. It's too early to tell where the film will land, but this is a very good start.
2012 was re-released in 3D and earned fourth place with $14.20 million on 5,516 screens in China.
Rise Of The Guardians earned the top ten for the first time earning fifth place with $10.52 million on 3,173 screens in 9 markets for a total of $14.05 million after two weeks of release. The film opened in second place in Russia with $6.22 million on 1,200 screens. By comparison, Wreck-It-Ralph made $5.27 million on 1,215 screens when it opened there earlier.
Cold War remained in sixth place with $8.89 million in 6 markets for a total of $45.25 million after three weeks of release. Of this, $670,000 was earned on 42 screens in Hong Kong lifting its total to $4.42 million in its native market.
Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo repeated on top of the box office chart in Japan with $6.80 million on 223 screens screens over the weekend for a total of $34.85 million. This is a lot given the size of this market, but a 51% drop-off is incredibly steep for Japan.
Argo slipped a spot to eighth with $6.0 million on 2,520 screens in 47 markets for a total of $50.0 million. It is mostly coasting on holdovers (it opened in a few smaller markets) but it has performed well enough domestically that breaking even was inevitable, so this is a good result.
Hotel Transylvania added $5.74 million on 3,953 screens in 58 markets lifting its totals to $148.14 million internationally and $291.64 million worldwide. It is still on pace to top $300 million worldwide, but it will likely drop out of the top 10 before then.
Cloud Atlas rounded out the top ten with $5.31 million on 1,767 screens in 18 markets for a total of $26.69 million internationally and $52.48 million worldwide.
Silver Linings Playbook just missed the top ten in its debut with $3.84 million on 830 screens in 5 markets. It managed fourth place in the U.K. with $2.02 million on 393 screens and in Russia with $1.70 million on 411.
