2013 Awards Season: SAG Focuses a Searchlight on Silver Linings

SAG nominations were announced and there were only a few surprises to deal with. Leading the way for total nominations was The Silver Linings Playbook, Lincoln, and Les Miserables, all of which earned nominations in four of the six categories.

The categories and nominations are...

Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role

Outstanding Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture

Notes and Reactions...

  • The Silver Linings Playbook, Lincoln, and Les Miserables all earned four nominations, but I wouldn't call them tied exactly. The Silver Linings Playbook earned two nominations for their leads, which are a little more prestigious than the supporting awards.
  • Speaking of The Silver Linings Playbook's two leads. I was talking to my mother the other day about movies and she was upset that Jennifer Lawrence played a 17-year old in The Hunger Games and then was dating Bradley Cooper in The Silver Linings Playbook, who she said was in his forties. I explained that Jennifer Lawrence is 21 in real life and Bradley Cooper isn't in his forties, he's a year younger than me. Her response was, "You're too old to be dating Jennifer Lawrence as well." So if Jennifer Lawrence is reading this, my mother says I'm too old for you and our love will never be. And if Bradley Cooper is reading this, my mother thinks you are in your forties. One of you should be relieved and the other a little depressed. ... Moving on.
  • There was also a three way tie for first place among studios with Fox Searchlight, Universal, and Weinstein Co. all earning 5 nominations.
  • Javier Bardem earned a nomination for Skyfall, becoming the first Bond villain to earn a SAG nomination.
  • Les Miserables earned nods for Best Ensemble and Best Stunts. Usually the films that are made to win the former rarely do well in the latter.
  • Some thought The Master would be a bigger winner, but it was almost entirely shut out. Likewise, Django Unchained was thought be some to be a contender for a few nods, but it was completely shut out.
  • Nicole Kidman's nomination was a surprise for some, because The Paperboy earned bad reviews.
