Life of Pi rose to first place with $59.30 million on 10,027 screens in 64 markets for a total of $302.04 million internationally and $393.08 million worldwide. The film reportedly dominated the Russian box office with $14.2 million on 1,600 screens. It had to settle for second place in Australia with $5.18 million on 545 screens over the weekend for a total of $8.36 million. It managed third place in South Korea with $3.06 million on 392 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $5.35 million. This film has yet to open in Japan and a few smaller markets, so it isn't done yet and it should have no trouble getting to $500 million worldwide.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey was less than $1 million behind with $58.6 million in 13,330 screens in 64 markets for totals of $562.8 million internationally and $826.6 million worldwide. Its best market of the weekend was Germany, where it added $9.35 million on 831 screens over the weekend for a total of $73.69 million after two.
Up next were a pair of Chinese films, starting with Chinese Zodiac with $38.88 million in 7 markets over the weekend for a two-week total $128.01 million.
Lost In Thailand has found a huge audience in its native China with $31.8 million over the weekend for a total of $182.2 million after three weeks of release. If this keeps up, Hollywood studios will start making movies aimed at Chinese audiences, because they will be almost as important as the domestic audience.
Jack Reacher climbed into fifth place with $22.62 million on 4,432 screens in 47 markets for a total of $55.80 million. Its best market was Mexico where it placed second with $1.26 million on 670 screens. Its biggest market was Germany with $2.50 million on 489 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $2.84 million, but that was only enough for third place. It also placed third in Italy with $1.82 million on 357 screens. In Australia, the film could do no better than fifth place with $3.09 million on 226.
Wreck-It Ralph added $20.4 million on 4,873 screens in 55 markets to its running tally, which now sits at $133.9 million internationally. Worldwide, its total is $312.4 million, which is more than enough to ensure a profit early in its home market run. This past weekend, the film debuted in first place in Brazil with $3.53 million on 761 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $5.32 million. This is roughly inline with The Hobbit's debut in that market.
Les MisÚrables landed in seventh place with $14.4 million on 1,667 screens in 17 markets for a still early total of $80.98 million. It had no major market openings this past weekend, but it still fell a distressing 63% from last weekend.
Rise Of The Guardians remained in eighth place with $9.37 million on 4,557 screens in 56 markets for totals of $181.36 million internationally and $278.59 million worldwide. It should get to $200 million internationally and $300 million worldwide, but it will very likely fall out of the top ten before then.
The Impossible will fail to expand truly wide domestically, but it is closing in on $100 million internationally. This past weekend it made $9.36 million on 1,822 screens in 36 markets for a total of $82.31 million. This includes a second place, $6.48 million opening on 372 screens in the U.K.
The Last Tycoon was the third Chinese film in the top ten earning $9.25 million in 4 markets over the weekend for a total of $20.85 million after two weeks of release.
Skyfall fell out of the top ten with $7.24 million on 2,329 screens in 55 markets, lifting its totals to $726.78 million internationally and $1.024 billion worldwide. It is about to overtake Alice in Wonderland for 11th place on the all-time chart and reaching the top ten is not out of the question.
