Amy Schumer: Mostly Sex Stuff - Buy from Amazon

Two stand-up comedy concert DVDs in one month. This one features Amy Schumer in her first hour-long TV special. With a name like Mostly Sex Stuff, you expect a raunchy set. Does it deliver? And does it deliver laughs as well as raunchiness?

The Set

I'm going to avoid any real discussion of the specifics of the set, because it is hard to talk about a joke without spoiling the joke. Also, there are not a lot of different topics that are brought up during the set.

I'm of two minds when it comes to this set. On the one hand, Mostly Sex Stuff isn't just a name, it's practically a legally binding guarantee. She talks a lot about sex. I don't have a problem with comics talking about sex; in fact, it is rather refreshing to hear about it from a female perspective. That said, while she does come up with a lot of different topics, from her personal life, her opinions on porn, personal grooming, etc., it can get repetitive. Secondly, it is clear that this is her first hour-long special. The pacing isn't quite right (perhaps it was better when it was cut down to 40+ minutes for TV). Some of her segues are forced and the show doesn't flow as well as it should and fails to build momentum. At one time, she even forgets where she was in the a joke. To be fair, this was due to her interacting with the audience and it is quite funny when it happens.

On the other hand, there are many funny moments in the set and I did laugh quite a bit. She is clearly very funny and overall I recommend the DVD, but I don't think this set showcases her talent quite as well as it should.

The Extras

Amy Schumer first came to prominence at the Comedy Central Roasts of Charlie Sheen and Roseanne Barr and both of her performances are here. There is also a two-minute clip with her and her sister.

The Verdict

Amy Schumer: Mostly Sex Stuff is good, but it is not great, and I think she could be great. There are enough extras that it is worth the price if you are a fan of hers, while it is worth renting if you like raunchier humor.
