DVD and Blu-ray Releases for February 12th, 2013

February 12, 2013

It's a busy week, not only in terms of big selling DVDs and Blu-ray, but also in terms of quality. Skyfall will be the best-selling DVD and Blu-ray of the week, plus it is a contender for Pick of the Week. It is not the only contender, as The Perks of Being a Wallflower (DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack); The Sessions (DVD or Blu-ray); Bully (DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack); Nurse Jackie: Season Four (DVD or Blu-ray) and The Thieves (DVD or Blu-ray) were all contenders. In the end, I went with Skyfall, but it was close.

Big Bad Beetleborgs: Season One, Volume 2 - Buy from Amazon
I reviewed the previous volume of this show, but the screener for this one won't be arriving. The show didn't change a lot from volume one to two, so you probably don't need read another review for volume two.

Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon: The Comeback: Remastered Edition, Dangerous Liaisons, Die Screaming, Marianne: Remastered Edition, House of Whipcord: Remastered Edition, Inuyasha: The Final Act, Set 2, The Kid with a Bike (Criterion Collection), Rise of the Zombies, Schizo: Remastered Edition, and The Very Best of WCW Monday Nitro, Volume 2
There are a lot of other Blu-rays coming out this week, but they are double and triple-dips from the Bond franchise.

3D Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon: Adventure Coral Reef 3D - Under the Sea of Egypt
Only one 3D release this week, and it is Edutainment.

Bonanza: The Official Complete Fifth Season - Buy from Amazon
This screener arrived unannounced and I just don't have the time to review it. That's why it is part of this week's contest.

Bully - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
A documentary about the bullying epidemic. The film earned great reviews and did extremely well at the box office for a documentary. There are lots of extras on the DVD and the Blu-ray, including a shorter version of the film edited for younger audiences, as well as deleted scenes and a lot of little featurettes. Easily worth picking up and a contender for Pick of the Week.

David Attenborough: Life Stories - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
A two-and-a-half hour long documentary about David Attenborough and some of the amazing things he's seen and done in his life. The DVD or the Blu-ray is a must have for his fans.

Doctor Who - Buy from Amazon: Episode 8: The Reign of Terror
One of the earliest Doctor Who stories, and one that is sadly still partially missing. (Episodes four and five of this six-part story are animated.) Even so, it is absolutely worth picking up for fans of the franchise, as it is very unlikely more episodes will be found at this point.

Dora the Explorer: Dora's Butterfly Ball - Buy from Amazon
The latest DVD from the long running cartoon for preschoolers comes out this week. What episodes are found on the DVD and are there any extras? Read our review to find out.

Duck Dodgers: Dark Side of the Duck: Season 1 - Buy from Amazon: Buy from Amazon
Duck Dodgers is a character from Looney Tunes that has been around for a long time, and one that has had more than a few incarnations over the years. This 2003 series one earned some really good reviews, while it is coming out on a complete season set and not a single disc DVD. Worth picking up.

Girl Model - Buy from Amazon
A documentary about the modeling industry that focuses on a young girl just entering the profession. Is it worth checking out for fans of fashion? Will it have a wider appeal? Check out our review for my opinion.

Gossip Girl: The Complete Sixth and Final Season - Buy from Amazon
The CW is hurting for ratings at the moment and they are probably wishing they had a hit like Gossip Girl was during its first few seasons. Unfortunately, the quality of writing fluctuated and the viewers left. In the end, its ratings were about a third of its peak. Still, if you are a fan of the show, it might be nice to catch up on the end. Also coming out this week is a The Complete Series.

The Hardy Boys: Season 3 - Buy from Amazon
The last of the Hardy Boys TV series from the 1970s. Since this show was split with Nancy Drew, there are only ten episodes, so the price-per-minute is not as good as it first looks.

A Liar's Autobiography - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
An autobiography of Graham Chapman. I was hoping to get a screener to review, but I don't think it will arrive. The reviews are only mixed with a lot of critics complaining that the film is unfocused.

The Man with the Iron Fists - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
A martial arts movie that is perhaps a little too stylish, but entertaining nonetheless. Unfortunately, it bombed at the box office, which explains why there are not a lot of extras on the DVD or the Blu-ray, but if you are a fan of the genre, it is worth a rental anyway.

Matlock: Season Eight - Buy from Amazon
The second to last season of Matlock comes out on DVD this week. The show lasted nine seasons, but did it continue its strong run during season eight? Or had the show gotten stale? Read our review for my opinion.

Mimesis - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
A low budget horror film with only one review on Rotten Tomatoes. It is positive, which is a good sign, but that is not enough to really judge a film. The DVD and the Blu-ray have an audio commentary track, which is a nice extra, but it is the only extra.

Nurse Jackie: Season Four - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray While this show has a lot of strengths, it also has a frustrating quality to it. Does the strengths continue to outshine the weaknesses? Or are the weaknesses become more prominent? Check out our review for my opinion.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
An entrant in this year's Awards Season sweepstakes. It did very well with critics, picked up a couple of major nominations, and did better than the vast majority of limited releases do at the box office. Overall, I think everyone involved should be very happy with the film's performance. The DVD and Blu-ray include two audio commentary tracks, deleted scenes, and behind-the-scenes. Easily worth picking up and a contender for Pick of the Week.

Photographic Memory - Buy from Amazon
A documentary about a father trying to connect with his son, and in turn trying to connect with his own past. It is a personal documentary, but will it appeal to a wider audience? Read our review to find out.

Robot and Frank - Buy from Amazon
Frank Langella stars as an older man whose family buys him a robot to keep him company in his old age. At first he hates the robot, then he realizes he can teach it to do his old job, which is a cat burglar. (His family doesn't know about this part of his past.) The film's reviews were great and it did really well in limited release, but never quite expanded as wide as I was hoping. Still, the DVD is worth picking up.

The Sessions - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
John Hawkes plays a man trapped in an iron lung who wants to lose his virginity. The film has earned amazing reviews and has done very well during Awards Season. The extras are good, but not great. That said, it is still worth picking up. It is even a contender for Pick of the Week thanks to the reviews.

Silent Hill: Revolution - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
I liked Silent Hill more than most critics, but when I heard they were making a sequel, I had my doubts. My doubts were optimistic as the film's reviews were brutal and its flopped at the box office. Now it is coming out on DVD and Blu-ray, but there are no extras on either. Skip it. It is also coming out on 3D, but not for two weeks.

Skyfall - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
Everyone assumed this film would be a monster hit. Even at its lowest point, the Bond franchise has always been profitable, at least on the international stage if not domestically. However, no one thought it would do this well. It made more than $1 billion worldwide. Additionally, it earned better than 90% positive reviews, making it one of the best reviewed wide releases of the year as well. I was hoping to get to copy to review, but that seems unlikely at this point. There are lots of extras, including two audio commentary tracks plus a lot of shorter featurettes. It is easily worth picking up and a clear contender for Pick of the Week. Also coming out this week are the Pierce Brosnan Box Set, the two volume Roger Moore Box Set and countless Blu-ray. Only Skyfall isn't a double-dip.

Slugterra: Return Of The Shane Gang - Buy from Amazon
Slugterra is the latest cartoon based on a toy line / competitive game. There have been countless examples of these shows since Pokemon first became popular. Does this show stand out from the crowd? Check out our review to find out.

Smiley - Buy from Amazon
A teenage slasher that earned terrible reviews and went nowhere at the box office. Even if you are a fan of the genre, there are better options out there.

Storage Wars: Volume Four - Buy from Amazon
I don't understand the appeal of this show, but my dad loves it. The screener arrived unannounced and since it is Oscar time and I don't have the time to review it, it is being placed in the price pool. The contest will begin likely on Friday.

The Thieves - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
One of the biggest South Korean hits of all time comes out on the home market this weekend. Is it worth picking up for fans of South Korean action cinema? Will it have a wider appeal here? Read our review to find out.

Weeds: Season Eight - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
I've reviewed a number of seasons of this show, but by season six it had gotten so bad I gave up on it and I didn't bother requesting season eight to review. It still arrived, but I'm punching it over to the prize pool, so the contest for it will start soon.
