Oz the Great and Powerful began its international run in first place with $69.2 million on 11,250 screens in 46 markets. It crushed the competition is Russia with $14.65 million on 1,137 screens, but this particular market tends to reward fantasy films. It wasn't quite as strong in the U.K., but still earned first place with $5.53 million on 530 screens. It also topped the charts in Mexico ($5.26 million on 207 screens); in Australia ($4.88 million on 268); in Brazil ($4.39 million 732); Italy ($3.76 million 588); Germany ($3.74 million on 548); and in Spain ($2.62 million on 649). On the other hand, it had to settle for second place in Japan with $2.81 million on 584 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $3.50 million. It could do no better than fourth in South Korea with $1.58 million on 425 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $1.73 million. It is too soon to tell where it will end up, but this is a good start.
Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters rose to second place with $11.55 million on 3,413 screens in 43 markets for totals of $140.91 million after eight weeks of release. The only major opening of the weekend came from France where the film debuted in fourth place with $2.42 million on 418 screens. Its international numbers alone are enough to cover its production budget, while its worldwide number is very close to bringing it to profitability. Unless it bombs completely on the home market, it will earn a profit.
Journey To The West: Conquering The Demons fell to third place with $10.15 million in 6 markets for a total of $203.78 million after a month of release. It likely won't be the last Chinese film to reach $200 million this year.
A Good Day to Die Hard fell to fourth place with $8.96 million on 5,494 screens in 67 markets for totals of $177.11 million internationally and $240.48 million worldwide. It missed expectations, but it will likely still break even sometime on the home market.
Upside Down entered the top ten for the first time in its run with $7.37 million in five markets for a total of $19.01 million so far. It opens domestically in limited release this week, so I'll have more thoughts on that tomorrow... or technically later today.
Doraemon: Nobita In The Secret Gadgets Museum earned first place in Japan and sixth place internationally with $6.94 million on 353 screens.
Silver Linings Playbook rose to seventh place with $6.94 million on 2,695 screens in 42 markets for totals of $74.79 million internationally and $195.41 million worldwide. This film has been profitable for a while. The only question now is whether it can reach $100 million internationally and maybe $250 million worldwide.
Les MisÚrables fell to eighth place with $6.0 million on 5,564 screens in 45 markets for totals of $275.36 million internationally and $423.50 million worldwide. Just its international numbers are probably enough to cover its entire production budget and its global P&A budget.
Mama entered the top ten for the first time during its run. It managed ninth place with $5.9 million on 1,980 screens in 19 markets for a relatively early total for $41.33 million. Its biggest opening of the weekend came from Russia, where it earned third place with $2.58 million on 441 screens. This was a relatively inexpensive movie to make, so it might have already broken even, depending on its global P&A budget.
Jack The Giant Slayer plummeted from fourth to tenth with just $5.3 million on 1,370 screens in 10 markets for a still early international total of $23.0 million. I see nearly no path to profitability for this film.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey fell out of the top ten with $4.9 million on 1,780 screens in 24 markets for totals of $708.3 million internationally and $1.010 billion worldwide. The trilogy will break even early in the second film's box office run.
