Per Theater Chart: Gimme Got the Loot

March 27, 2013

Gimme the Loot led the way on the per theater chart with $21,065 in its lone theater. The overall box office leader, The Croods, was the only other film in the $10,000 club with an average of $10,786.

There were a number of other new limited releases that debuted over the weekend, but the majority of them really struggled. The Sapphires was one of the few exceptions and it earned an average of $9,593 in four theaters. It should expand somewhat, but I don't think it will escape the art house circuit. New World was playing in 24 theaters, which is a lot, but still managed an average of $5,415. Starbuck's American debut brought in an average of $5,177 in three theaters. My Brother the Devil was right behind, and I mean right behind, with an average of $5,153 in two theaters. The Pardon was the only other film to avoid opening below the Mendoza Line, barely, with an average of $2,013 in eight theaters.

Love and Honor wasn't as lucky with an average of $1,408 in two theaters. Silver Circle was next with $1,314 in its lone theater. Dorfman in Love didn't even get halfway to the Mendoza Line with an average of $973 in nine theaters. Further down the list we find Hunky Dory with an average of $677 in eleven theaters. InAPPropiate Comedy did about as well as expected with an average of $569 in 275 theaters. I don't there will be many studios willing to make anthology comedies for a long time. Come Out and Play was even worse with an average of $160 in ten theaters.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Stoker got to $1 million over the weekend, but its per theater average is low enough that to get much further than that will be difficult.
  • Spring Breakers got to $5 million over the weekend, which is rare for a limited release. However, it also expanding to over 1,000 theaters during its second weekend of release, which is also rare.
  • Quartet reached $15 million before the weekend, which is amazing for a limited release.
  • Silver Linings Playbook surpassed $125 million since this time last week. By the end of the weekend, it had overtaken Prometheus's total.
