DVD Sales: Ray of Sunshine for Dark Skies

June 23, 2013

New releases were really weak with only one reaching the top ten on the DVD sales chart. That film was Dark Skies, which opened in first place with 136,000 units / $2.04 million. This is actually a little better than expected, given its box office numbers. Fast and Furious roared into second place with 127,000 units / $2.25 million for the week, giving it totals of 3.58 million / $58.12 million after close to nearly four years of release. It wasn't the only Fast and the Furious to chart this week. Parker fell from first to third with 124,000 units / $2.48 million for the week and 295,000 units / $5.11 million after two weeks of release. The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift earned fourth place with 119,000 units / $1.38 million over the week and 2.74 million units / $40.68 million after nearly seven years of release. The Fast and the Furious was right behind with 118,000 units / $1.74 million for the week. It was released so long ago, it has been on DVD since before DVDs were tracked, so we don't have a solid number on the total sales. Likewise, 2 Fast 2 Furious rose to seventh place with 110,000 units / $1.03 million, but again, it has been out on DVD for so long, nearly a decade, that we don't have solid running tallies. Fast Five also reached the top 30 with 46,000 units / $593,000 for the week, which is enough for 20th place. In total, the film as sold 2.29 million units / $33.75 million.

Bubble Guppies: Sunny Days! just missed the top ten with 81,000 units / $810,000, which is great for a TV on DVD release and a preschooler show. The Numbers Station placed 14th with 68,000 units / $880,000. This isn't a terrible stop for a limited release, but I doubt this film was made with a limited release in mind.
