Per Theater Chart: IMAX Shines Like the Son

August 21, 2013

Space Station remained in first place on the per theater chart, again with $30,602. The film has made $2 million so far this year and it seems likely it will last long enough to get to $100 million in total, eventually. You Will Be My Son was next with $15,301 in one theater. Surprisingly Austenland made the $10,000 club. Given its reviews and its genre, earning its per theater average of $10,166 in four theaters is surprisingly high. Blue Jasmine rounded out the $10,000 club with $10,005. It is already playing in 229 theaters and it will expand more.

There were a couple of other new limited releases that did rather well. Ain't Them Bodies Saints earned an average of $8,806 in three theaters. Cutie and the Boxer also played in three theaters with an average of $7,033. Spark: A Burning Man Story opened with an average of $4,683 in two theaters. Underdogs was right behind with an average of $4,681 in four theaters. Had it sold just one ticket more, it likely would have topped Spark's average. The Patience Stone was more middling with an average of $3,494 in two theaters. Inch'Allah earned $3,391 in one theater over the weekend. It did much better during its run in Canada last year. Drew: The Man Behind the Poster opened with just $1,764 in one theater.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • The Spectacular Now topped $1 million late in the weekend. It should continue to expand and should have no trouble getting to at least a couple more milestones.
  • Twenty Feet From Stardom reached $4 million, which is stunning for a documentary.
  • Chennai Express hit $4 million late in the weekend. It did fall 60% during its sophomore stint, which is really bad compared to most limited releases. However, this is actually better than average for Bollywood releases. Even with this sharp decline, $5 million should still be obtainable.
