Elysium rushed to top spot with $24.04 million on 4,588 screens in 41 markets for an early total of $40.08 million. This week it opened in France with $4.16 million on 466 screens, which was enough for first place. It also debuted in first place in Australia ($3.38 million on 317 screens); and in Germany ($3.20 million on 584); and Spain ($3.04 million on 450). It was pushed into third place in Russia with $2.98 million on 976 screens for a total of $12.50 million after two weeks of release. It fell 58%, which is actually better than average for a sophomore film in Russia.
Percy Jackson: Sea Of Monsters rose to second place $21.8 million on 5,576 screens in 36 markets for a two-week total of $36.5 million. It earned first place in Brazil with $3.84 million on 614 screens, while it settled for second place in France with $3.84 million on 584. It only managed third place in Germany with $2.04 million. It plummeted from second to ninth place in the U.K. to $1.30 million on 461 screens over the weekend for totals of $6.64 million. That's not a good sign for the film's future.
Pacific Rim added $20 million on 5,500 screens in 58 markets for an international total of $286 million, while its worldwide total rose to $384 million. It made $23.50 million in China, but that was for the full week. It has pulled in $103.41 million in total there, which is more than it made here. However, studios get about 60% of the domestic box office and only 20% of the Chinese box office, at least they will once the problems in China are dealt with.
Despicable Me 2 earned $19.7 million on 5,946 screens in 53 markets for totals of $435.56 million internationally and $781.68 million worldwide. It has made more than $200 million more than the original film and it has now overtaken Fast and Furious 6 for second place for the year.
The Smurfs 2 plummeted to fifth place with $19.33 million on 8,544 screens in 66 markets for a total of $149.59 million so far. It is not going to match its predecessor, so I worry about The Smurfs 3.
The Wolverine took in $10.8 million on 6,726 screens in 72 markets for totals of $216.4 million internationally and $337.0 million worldwide. By next week, it should become the biggest international hit in the franchise.
We're the Millers opened in seventh place with $10.6 million in 1,600 screens in 13 markets. It opened in second place in Russia with $3.29 million on 888 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $7.04 million. It earned third place in Australia with $2.12 million on 342 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $2.41 million.
Grown Ups 2 earned $9.72 million on 2,980 screens in 34 markets for an international total of $44.77 million. The film managed first place in Mexico with $3.62 million on 891 screens, but only managed third place in Brazil with $1.47 million in 243.
Now You See Me fell to ninth place with $9.5 million in 64 markets for a total of $158.0 million internationally and $274.0 million worldwide. This is more than enough to cover its production budget, likely with enough to pay for its P&A budget.
Hide And Seek opened in first place in South Korea and tenth place internationally with $8.74 million over the weekend for a total opening of $13.57 million.
