DVD Sales: Go Joe, Go to the Top

October 23, 2013

We had the biggest new release in nearly two months leading the way on the August 4th, 2013 edition of the DVD sales chart. G.I. Joe: Retaliation opened in first place with 544,000 units / $8.16 million, which is an okay start given its box office numbers / production budget. Fortunately, it was better on Blu-ray. 42 was a distant second place with 113,000 units / $1.63 million for the week for totals of 910,000 units / $13.58 million after three. It will reach 1 million units sold, which is good for a film that cost $40 million to make. Teen Beach Movie slipped to third with 102,000 units / $1.83 million over the week for a total of 295,000 units / $5.30 million after two. It fell just 32% during its sophomore stint, which is amazing on the home market. Additionally, $5 million in sales in two weeks is very good for a TV movie. Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox was the only other new release to chart this week and it pulled in fourth place with 63,000 units / $818,000. Most similar releases don't even chart, so this is a fine start. Despicable Me rounding out the top five with 52,000 units / $745,000 for the week. After more than two years of release, the film has sold 9.36 million units / $152.75 million.
