Samson and Delilah - Blu-ray - Buy from Amazon
This will be a short review. Samson and Delilah made its DVD debut less than a year a ago and I reviewed it then. This week, it makes its Blu-ray debut. My opinion of the movie hasn't changed since then, but how does the Blu-ray look and sound compared to the DVD?
The movie is an adaptation of the Bible story of the same name. It's more or less accurate to the source material, at least compared to most similar Bible Epics. However, it felt more like a love story with a Bible backdrop than a Bible Epic. It is sort of like Titanic, which is a love story with a disaster movie backdrop rather than a disaster movie. Some people love the movie, but I didn't buy the central romance, so I wasn't sold on the movie. It does look nice, on the other hand. There is a reason the film earned Oscars for art direction and costume design.
Like last time, there are no extras on the Blu-ray.
The technical presentation is strong, for the most part. The movie is 65 years old and you have to keep that in mind. There are a few scenes where level of details is not as high as I would like, but these scenes are the exception rather than the rule. The colors are better and are consistently amazing while the blacks are deep without destroying details. On the other hand, the audio is 2.0 stereo. Granted, the film was original shot in Mono, so a stereo mix is an improvement, but obviously this is a really uncomplicated audio track.
The Blu-ray is $17, which is $4 or 31% more than the DVD.
Samson and Delilah is making its Blu-ray debut this week. If you picked up the DVD last year, you might be more than a little annoyed that the Blu-ray has come out so soon, but if you decided to wait, you made the right call.
