X-Men: Days of Future Past dominated the international box office chart with $171.08 million in 71 markets for a total opening of $191.00 million. This includes China, where it earned first place with $39.35 million on 6,000 screens. It also earned first place in the U.K. with $15.39 million on 537 screens, while in South Korea it earned $11.78 million on 1,056 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $14.15 million. Mexico contributed $9.39 million on 3,034 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $11.02 million. The film's debut in Russia was very similar with $9.90 million on 2,230 screens. France was right behind with $9.29 million on 620 screens, while in Brazil it pulled in $8.38 million on 507. The film earned $7.80 million on 684 screens in Australia. It struggled a little more in Germany and Spain with $4.03 million on 579 screens and $3.19 million on 650 respectively.
Godzilla plummeted to just $34.5 million on 9,389 screens in 64 markets for a two-week total of $166.6 million internationally and $314.9 million worldwide. Its biggest market was the U.K., where the film added $4.60 million on 546 screens over the weekend to its running tally, which now sits at $19.90 million. Mexico was next with $2.63 million on 1,759 screens over the weekend for a two-week total of $13.52 million.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 plummeted as well, down to just $10.84 million on 10,059 screens in 92 markets; however, it has already made $488.17 million internationally and $673.09 million worldwide. Usually films have better legs internationally than they do domestically, but that hasn't been the case for this film (or for Godzilla, for that matter). The film needed to earn $750 million to $800 million worldwide to break even, but it is no longer on track to get there. It will need to do well on the home market to break even, which it should do. However, "break even" and "make enough money to justify another installment" are two different things.
Neighbors was next with $8.2 million on 2,549 screens in 35 markets for a four-week total of $68.16 million. The film had no new major market openings this past weekend, but even if it had no major markets left, it would still be on pace to get to $100 million international, more or less, which is more than enough to make the studio happy.
Coming Home earned $8.2 million over the weekend in China for a two-week total of $33.5 million.
Frozen rose a spot to fifth with $6.88 million on 713 screens in 7 market for total of $818.7 million internationally and $1.219 billion worldwide. It has now become the biggest hit from 2013, overtaking Iron Man 3. The film remained in first place in Japan earning $6.87 million on 650 screens over the weekend for a total of $194.12 million after eleven weeks of release. By this time next week, it will have become the first film to earn $200 million in that market.
Rio 2 remained in seventh place with $4.8 million on 4,674 screens in 34 markets for totals of $329.2 million internationally and $450.8 million worldwide. With openings in Japan and Australia ahead of it, Rio 2 isn't done quite yet, while it has already made enough to be considered a financial success.
Walk of Shame entered the top ten for the first time in its run with $4.75 million on 799 screens in 14 markets for a three-week total of $5.51 million. The film opened in first place in the Philippines with $4.04 million on 428 screens. That's more than X-Men: Days of Future Past opened with this past weekend.
Qu'est-ce qu'on a fait au Bon Dieu? held on well earning $4.63 million on 831 screens in 3 markets for a total of $72.72 million after six weeks of release. In France, it made $4.35 million on 766 screens for a total of $68.86 million.
The Other Woman rounded out the top ten with $4.06 million on 2,491 screens in 43 markets for an international total of $86.9 million after six weeks of release. The film opened in Spain, France, and Italy in June and once it is done there, it will likely have $200 million worldwide.
