DVD and Blu-ray Releases for June 10th, 2014

June 11, 2014

This week's list of new DVD and Blu-rays includes a couple of first run releases, but neither are really must haves. Of all of the theatrical releases coming out this week, Alan Partridge on DVD or Blu-ray is the one I'm most interested in seeing, but the screener is still late. I'm also waiting for the screener for Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey, but I saw every episode on TV and the DVD or Blu-ray is clearly a contender for Pick of the Week. So is True Detective: Season One on DVD or Blu-ray. It was a bit of a coin toss, but in the end I went with Cosmos.

Adult World - Buy from Amazon
Emma Roberts stars as a poet who hasn't had her big break and is reduced to working in a porn shop. Is this coming of age story worth checking out? And are there any extras on the DVD? Read our review to find out.

Alan Partridge - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
I'm still waiting for the screener for this film. I'm really looking forward to it, because I love the two lead actors and the sense of humor seems right up my alley. Also, the reviews are outstanding. Based on that, it is definitely worth picking up. If the extras are good, it could be a Pick of the Week contender.

Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon: All That Heaven Allows (Criterion Collection), Amen, Bushido Man: Seven Deadly Battles, L'eclisse (Criterion Collection), Karneval: Complete Series (Limited Edition), Kill Zombie!, Kismet, Leviathan: The Last Defense: The Complete Collection, Maoyu: Complete Collection, Patrick: Evil Awakens, Shameless: Season 3, and Tightrope
The list of secondary Blu-ray releases includes a couple of Criterion Collection releases, as well as a few Anime titles. That said, nothing jumps out as a must have.

Brazil With Michael Palin - DVD or Blu-ray
Michael Palin is the world's most famous professional tourist. This time around, he's in Brazil, just in time for the World Cup. I really don't think that's a coincidence.

Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
I'm still waiting for the screener for this release, but I watched every episode when it was on TV and loved it. It is absolutely worth picking up and even without having seen the extras, it is a contender for Pick of the Week. The extras are on par with most TV on DVD releases and include an audio commentary track and a few featurettes. We need more science shows on prime time network TV.

Date A Live: Season One - Blu-ray Combo Pack - Buy from Amazon
According to Amazon.com, this is the eighth best-selling new release, if you ignore multiple formats for the releases above it. We are seeing some signs that Anime is breaking out into the mainstream, so this is further proof of that. On a side note, while Amazon calls it the complete series, it is, as the box says, just season one.

Devil's Knot - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
A film by Atom Egoyan about the West Memphis Three. Unfortunately, while the real life story is amazing, this movie is not and it has been covered in a number of documentaries.

Doctor Who: Series Three - Part One - Buy from Amazon
I feel sorry for Whovians. It seems that the BBC is determined to get ever penny they can out of their fans. There are already way too many DVDs released, so re-releasing the newer ones with new extras just seems mean.

Haunt - Buy from Amazon
A horror movie with a really generic name. Is this a bad omen? Is the movie as generic as it sounds? Or does it do something new within the haunted house genre. Check out our review for my opinion.

Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
The latest installment in the Jack Ryan franchise. It was by far the weakest at the box office, but is it also the weakest in terms of quality? Or did it deserve better? Read our review to find out.

Klondike - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
A TV mini-series set during the Klondike gold rush. The reviews were mostly good and the extras include interviews and behind-the-scene featurettes.

Major Crimes: Season 2 - Buy from Amazon
A spin-off of The Closer. It isn't earning as good reviews, but it is still better than most summer shows are. It broke the record for highest ratings for a cable premiere and fans of the original will likely want to check out this series as well.

Note: This Blu-ray made its home market debut on the 4th of February.

Napoleon Dynamite: 10th Anniversary Edition - Blu-ray Combo Pack - Buy from Amazon
According to Amazon.com, this Blu-ray came out on February 4th. So why did it take so long for me to review? The screener arrived more than three months late. Sometimes these things happen. So was it worth the wait? Has the film aged well in the past ten years? Read our review for my opinion.

Non-Stop - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
The latest Liam Neeson early year action film. How does it compare to other such films like Taken or The Grey. Check out our review for my opinion.

Omar - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
An Oscar-nominated foreign-language film that takes place in the Middle-East and deals with Omar, who is either a freedom fighter or a terrorist, depending on your point of view. The reviews are over 90% positive, so it is worth picking up for fans of foreign-language films, but I haven't seen any information about the extras, so it is likely not a Pick of the Week contender.

Perfect Sisters - Buy from Amazon
Abigail Breslin and Georgie-Henley star as sisters whose abusive mother accidentally killed herself. Or was it an accident? The reviews are really weak with a lot of critics complaining that it doesn't have a light enough touch considering the film is inspired by a real life story.

Perry Mason: Movie Collection: Volume One
Double-Feature 1 - Buy from Amazon
Double-Feature 2 - Buy from Amazon
Double-Feature 3 - Buy from Amazon
The first volume of the Perry Mason movies came out this week in three separate Double-Features. I didn't get a chance to review them the first time around, so how are these movies? And are the Double-Features worth picking up? Check out our review to find out.

Ray Donovan: Season One - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
When Ray Donavan debuted last year, it broke the record for highest ratings for a premiere on Showtime. Is it also one of the best shows on Showtime? Check out our review for my opinion.

The Redemption of Henry Myers - Buy from Amazon
According to Amazon.com, this is in the top ten for best-selling new DVDs. However, there are no reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. Odd.

Resurrection: Season 1 - Buy from Amazon
This series started out amazingly, but its ratings dropped considerably very quickly. In the end, it still was strong enough to justify a second season, but I'm not sure if it will last much longer. Because of this, I'm not sure I can recommend the show, because it is very likely most of the questions from the premise won't be answered. On the other hand, if you loved the show, strong DVD sales might be the only thing to save it.

Rizzoli & Isles: Season 4 - Buy from Amazon
One of the better police procedurals on TV at the moment and good for a summer show as well. Given its ratings, it has a least a few more seasons left in it, unless something drastic changes.

Seattle Seahawks Road to Super Bowl 48 - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
I remember seeing the spread for this game and Denver was the favored to win by a field goal. I scoffed because I knew it was going to be a blowout and figured Seattle was going to win by 17 points. They won by 35 points. As for this DVD, it is more than six hours long and includes all three playoff games. This is perfect for fans of Seattle, or as a hate gift for fans of Denver.

The Short Game - Buy from Amazon
A documentary about golf, focusing on a group of 7-year olds who wish to become professionals. The reviews are excellent and most critics agree that you don't have to like golf to like this film.

Spike Lee Joint - Collection 1 - Buy from Amazon
Still waiting for the screener to arrive. If you don't own 25th Hour and He Got Game, it is worth picking up.

Tim's Vermeer - Blu-ray Combo Pack - Buy from Amazon
A documentary about Tim Jenison search for the answer to Johannes Vermeer's photo-realistic painting technique. The film's reviews are excellent and it earned more than $1 million at the box office, which is stunning for a documentary. Definitely worth picking up if you like documentaries is general and art history in particular.

True Detective: Season One - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
This show earned some of the best buzz for a new series, but there were some complaints that the ending didn't live up to the promise. Is this the case? And if so, is the overall show still worth checking out? Read our review to find out.

Visitors - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
A documentary about ... I'm not sure. I don't think there is a narrative to the movie, just a series of shots that are supposed to elicit an emotional response. Most critics say the film does just that, but many also say it is too avant garde for its own good.

The Who: Quadrophenia: Live in London - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Quadrophenia is one of the greatest Rock albums of all time and by most reports, the 2013 concert tour promoting its 40th anniversary was amazing. Worth picking up if you are a fan of The Who.
