Transformers: Age of Extinction remained in first place with $95.8 million in 37 markets over the weekend for totals of $400.9 million internationally and $576.3 million worldwide. Its best market remains China, where it added $120.61 million for the full week giving it a total of $222.74 million after two. These numbers are important for two reasons. Firstly, revised totals in China put the film's opening there ahead of its debut in North America. Stunning. Secondly, the film is already ahead of Avatar's final figure in that market. Granted, it's barely above Avatar's pace, as that film pulled in $221.9 million after ten days of release, but that is still great news. It held up better than most films do in South Korea earning $8.05 million on 1,096 screens over the weekend for a total of $34.62 million. In Russia, the film added $7.04 million on 2,171 screens over the weekend for a total of $35.38 million after two. The last major market was Australia, where it pulled in $4.54 million on 623 screens over the weekend for a two-week total of $17.32 million.
How to Train Your Dragon 2 climbed into second place with $33.5 million on 9,732 screens in 59 markets for totals of $153.2 million internationally and $293.4 million worldwide. The film's only major market opening was in France, where it dominated the marketplace with $8.22 million on 699 screens.
The Breakup Guru slipped to third place with $17.5 million over the weekend for a total of $65.48 million after two weeks of release in China.
Maleficent remained in fourth place with $17.3 million over the weekend for totals of $416.3 million internationally and $630.2 million worldwide. At this pace, the film is about one week away from topping Kung Fu Panda 2 for the biggest hit in Angelina Jolie's career. This includes a first place, $6.78 million opening on 643 screens in Japan, meaning Frozen's run on the top of that market is finally over.
22 Jump Street climbed a spot to fifth with $10.29 million on 2,734 screens over the weekend for a total of $69.98 million after a month of release. This is already more than the original finished with internationally. The film opened in second place in Russia with $4.09 million on 1,021 screens, but that was its only major market opening of the week.
It was a milestone weekend for The Fault in Our Stars as it hit the century mark internationally. It did so with $10.1 million on 4,394 screens in 50 markets for totals of $104.2 million internationally and $220.1 million worldwide. Had the film finished with $100 million worldwide, the studio would have been happy. This result should make them ecstatic and I'm sure someone at Fox is trying to think of a way to make a sequel. The film opened in first place in Spain, but with only $861,000 on 325 screens.
Edge of Tomorrow earned $8.4 million on 3,700 screens in 60 markets for totals of $248.6 million internationally and $339.5 million worldwide. It debuted in second place in Japan with $2.54 million on 632 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $4.50 million.
The Divine Move opened in second place in South Korea and eighth place internationally with $7.63 million on 789 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $9.59 million.
Blended was next with $6.0 million on 3,000 screens in 47 markets for an international total of $41.7 million. Its biggest market was Mexico, where it was down less than 10% to $2.05 million on 895 screens over the weekend for a two-week total of $6.25 million. The film cost $45 million to make and will match that domestically and will top it internationally. This means, it will only need to cover its P&A budget on the home market to break even, which shouldn't be too difficult to accomplish.
Rio 2 rounded out the top ten with $5.2 million on 848 screens in 11 markets for totals of $354.7 million internationally and $483.6 million worldwide. The film opened in third place in Australia with $2.52 million on 471 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $4.24 million.
Frozen is wrapping up its run, but it is still worth keeping an eye on for a little while longer. It was finally knocked out of top spot in Japan, but still added $1.79 million on 480 screens in that market lifting its total there to $241.05 million. Internationally, the film has made $866.9 million while its worldwide total has reached $1.268 billion.
