Per Theater Chart: Boyhood has Extended Childhood

The biggest film on the per theater chart this weekend was Boyhood, for the second weekend in a row. It expanded from 5 to 34 theaters, but its average fell just 56% to $34,418. That's fantastic. It has already earned a measure of mainstream success, while it has its eyes on Chef for best limited release for the summer. Second place went to There's No Place Like Utopia with $30,710 in one theater. This is a great start, but there are still no reviews, so I think it will have short legs. A Five Star Life and Mood Indigo were relatively close with averages of $15,996 and $13,256 respectively. The only wide release to reach the $10,000 club was The Purge: Anarchy, which earned an average of $10,626.

There were a few other new limited releases that did quite well with Alive Inside earning $7,150 in one theater. Wish I Was Here earned an average of $7,124 in 68 theaters. Opening in 68 theaters is a lot for a limited release, so this is arguably the best result for any new limited release this weekend. I Origins opened in four theaters earning an average of $6,921. There were a couple of limited releases that missed the Mendoza Line, depending on what you consider a limited release. Persecuted opened in 736 theaters, which some consider semi-wide, but only made $851,000 for an average of $1,157. Video Games: The Movie opened in 25 theaters and only managed an average of $510.

This past week also saw milestones reached for several Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Boyhood earned more than $1 million over the weekend, so clearly it reached $1 million in total. It's not done.
  • Words and Pictures got to $2 million just before the weekend, but that's as far as it will go.
  • Chef reached $25 million over the weekend and is by far the biggest limited release of the summer so far. In fact, this is more than Endless Love made in total.
