Per Theater Chart: Last Days of Limited Releases

There was only one film in the $10,000 club this weekend, Last Days in Vietnam, which earned an average of $15,225 in two theaters.

The next best new limited releases was But Always earning an estimated $140,000 in 19 theaters for an average of $7,368. Wetlands was close behind with $6,488 in one theater. God Help the Girl earned an average of $5,665 in two theaters, while Kelly and Cal opened with $5,387 in one theater. Rocks in My Pockets and Levitated Mass were also really, really close together with $4,674 and $4,589 respectively. Frontera struggled with an average of $3,654 in three theaters. The Remaining was playing in 67 theaters, which is a lot, so that explains why it only managed an average of $2,375. Pay 2 Play: Democracy’s High Stakes was right behind with an opening of $2,233 in its lone theater. Falcon Rising missed the Mendoza Line with an average of just $869 in ten theaters. Innocence was even weaker with an average of $480 in nearly 500 theaters. Clearly this is too many theaters for a limited release, but I doubt it would have been a hit even if it were playing in a dozen or fewer theaters. The final new limited release was The House of Magic with an average of $409 in ten theaters.

This past week also saw milestones reached for several Per Theater Chart alumni:

• The Trip to Italy topped $1 million over the weekend. It likely won't expand much beyond this, but it still has a good shot at $2 million, which is what its predecessor finished with.
• What If made it to $3 million before the weekend, but that's as far as it will go.
• Calvary managed to hit $3 million over the weekend, which is better than I was expecting. It will start losing theaters at an accelerated pace, but $4 million is still a relatively easy target.
• Cantinflas fell 60% during its second weekend, but it still got past $4 million. It won't get significantly passed $5 million, on the other hand.
• Because of the holidays last week, we didn't get Begin Again's numbers on time, but we learned they hit $15 million. That's as far as it will go, but this is still strong for a limited release.
• Boyhood surpassed $20 million over the weekend and given its legs, $25 million is still a goal within reach.
