DVD and Blu-ray Releases for November 11th, 2014

It is not a very deep week on the home market. Leading the way is How to Train Your Dragon 2 on DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack or 3D Combo Pack. The film failed to live up to high expectations at the box office, but it earned Oscar-worthy reviews. If it doesn't at least earn a nomination for Best Feature-Length Animated Film, I would be shocked. So it should come as no surprise that the Pick of the Week is The Compleat Al, which is making its DVD debut this week.

The Megaset comes out this week as well and it's the better deal.
An unofficial documentary about The Beatles. It is four-discs, so there's a lot of interview material here, but since it is unofficial, I really doubt they have the rights to any of the music.
Gator is coming out on Blu-ray! Archer must be so excited. Critics were less impressed.
There's only one 3D release this week, but it is a prime release. How to Train Your Dragon 2 earned stellar reviews, even if it didn't do as well as expected at the box office.
I believe this is the first time the original Christmas in Connecticut is coming out on Blu-ray, so that makes it the best of this week's Christmas releases.
Oh my god! I haven't seen this movie in 20 years. Not since my VCR ate my VHS copy of the movie. Half the people reading this won't know what either of those things are. I must own this.
This show was one of the worst-reviewed new shows of last season, or any season really. I hear it got better as the season wore on, but I really don't think it matters since it started off so poorly.
An HBO show based on a British show of the same name. It takes place in an extended care wing of a hospital and looks at the nurses and doctors who are trying to keep the place running. The reviews for the first season were great. (The early reviews for the second season are even better.) It is worth checking out for sure. The extras are weak (outtakes and deleted scenes) so I can't be too enthusiastic.
One of two Anime series in the top ten according to Amazon.com. Strange.
One of the best-reviewed wide releases of the year. However, it didn't live up to high expectations at the box office. The DVD only has one featurette on the dragons, which isn't enough to recommend. However, the Blu-ray and the 3D combo packs are loaded with an audio commentary track, making of featurette, deleted scenes, and much more. It is easily worth picking up and a contender for Pick of the Week.
A lot of people thought this film would be amazing. It wasn't. It isn't a terrible movie; it is just very mediocre. The extras on the DVD are really weak. There are more extras on the Blu-ray, but not enough to be enthusiastic about recommending it. If you really like The Four Seasons, then the musical moments are worth it. But then again, if you really like The Four Seasons, just buy their music instead.
I've long since run out of things to say about this show. It's older than I am and there have been so many releases that I can't even remember what I said about it in the past, so I guarantee I would just be repeating myself.
Two idiots dress up as cops for a costume party and when people give them more respect than they are used to, they decide to be cops full time. This could have been a really good setup for a very funny buddy cop comedy. However, the critics mostly agree that there were simply not enough jokes in the movie for it to work. The extras are good, especially on the Blu-ray, so if you liked the movie it is worth picking up. If you didn't see it, it is best to avoid it.
A live show featuring the surviving members of Monty Python. The reviews are mostly good. Granted, there's a lot of nostalgia that is inflating the reviews, but it is still a good show for fans to watch. I believe the extras include a handful of behind-the-scenes featurettes, which is enough to recommend picking up the Blu-ray or DVD.
I tried and failed to get this streaming screener to work. I will try and find an alternative method of reviewing it. I'm looking forward to seeing it, as I'm a fan of the director and the star. Granted, the reviews were not great, but they were better than most films earn.
This film is based on the animated shorts from the Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends show. Taking something that works in a five-minute format and translating it to a feature-length film is risky. Were the filmmakers able to pull it off here? Or should fans stick with the original cartoons? Read our review to find out.
Can someone please explain to me why there are so many Manga / Anime with ungodly long names? Surely no one who is a fan of this show calls it by its full name.
This is the longest running show in the history of the Disney Chanel, overtaking Kim Possible. The latest DVD release features the Star Wars crossover. Does it work? Or is it just a gimmick? Check out our review for my opinion.
The reviewers on Amazon are savaging this release, because it is not official. I don't think it is fair to attack it like this without seeing it. Unofficial doesn't mean unfair or uninformative. The only true downside is unofficial usually means no music rights.
Good show, but expensive for this type of release.
According to Amazon.com, this is in the top ten best-selling new releases for the week. Either it is a very shallow week, or there's something strange going on over on Amazon.
After the series was canceled, Netflicks aired the final 13 episodes that were completed but never shown. Will fans of the series want to complete their collection? Or was there a reason the show was canceled before these were aired? Read our review for my opinion.
This film had a lot of advanced buzz, because Melissa McCarthy was on a huge winning streak at the box office. The reviews were terrible, but the film still managed to be a hit at the box office. It didn't top $100 million like some thought it could, but the studio should still be very happy with this result. On the other hand, the DVD is practically devoid of extras, while the Blu-ray has less than 20 minutes in total featurettes, outtakes, etc. Not worth it.
This started out as a great show, but its reviews really sank the last couple of seasons. If you bought every season so far, then it is likely you will want to complete your collection. However, I wouldn't be surprised if most people who started watching the show gave up before season seven even started. Also coming out this week is a Complete Series Megaset.
Wow. There's a wide range of TV on DVD Megasets on this week's list. Everything from a kids show, to faith-based family entertainment, to shows that could only air on a cable channels like HBO.
Personally, I love this movie. However, I will admit the average critic doesn't like it as much as I do. Additionally, it was virtually ignored at the box office. Fortunately, the Blu-ray is loaded with extras, including a new feature with Weird Al at Comic Con. Definitely worth picking up.
