DVD Sales - Sales Slump

August 27th, 2008

New releases were at their weakest in months. In fact, outside of TV on DVD, there were no new releases in the top five, and only one in the top ten. This left Nim's Island at the top of this week's sales chart with 178,000 units for the week, which is the lowest total for a number one film on our list since we've been keeping track of sales. In total, Nim's Island has sold 644,000 units for a two-week revenue tally of $12.05 million. More...

DVD Rentals - Island Paradise for Two

August 27th, 2008

There were no marquee new releases this week, which left Nim's Island in first place on the rental chart, although both Smart People and 21 were very close behind. More...

DVD Sales - Island Paradise

August 19th, 2008

New releases were rather weak, as they have been nearly every week this summer. But we did have a new number one film on this week's sales chart in Nim's Island, as it managed $8.74 million from 466,000 units sold. More...

DVD Rentals - Nim's Not Alone on the Rental Chart

DVD Releases for July 29, 2008 - Part I

July 29th, 2008

Another slow week without a single first run release that was a must have, or even a contender for DVD Pick of the Week. Granted, many will find Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay worth picking up, but it is not a top-notch release. There are also a couple of special edition releases that are easily worth picking up: Dark City - Director's Cut - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray and WarGames - 25th Anniversary Edition. But the best of the best, and the DVD Pick of the Week is Stargate - Continuum - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray. But I am also giving an honorable mention to Two Fat Ladies - Buy from Amazon. On a side note, it is another week where we had to split the list into two due to the size. Part II can be found here. More...

$100 Million for Iron Man?

May 5th, 2008

Summer started with a bang, and a whimper... it depends on what you compare it to. Over the weekend, the box office totaled $159 million in ticket sales, which is 75% more than last weekend. However, it is also 16% less than the same weekend last year when Spider-man 3 smashed the record for biggest opening weekend. Compared to expectations, this was a great start; compared to last year, 2008 continues to struggle. More...

International Details - No Foolin'

May 4th, 2008

Fool's Gold opened in a trio of major markets and that helped the film climb into sixth place with $4.93 million on 1809 screens in 39 markets for a total of $26.30 million. The film did relatively well in Spain with $1.03 million on 272 screens and in Germany with $934,000 on 254 screens while earning second place in both markets. On the other hand, it bombed in Italy with just $516,000 on 232 screens landing in sixth place. Overall, it was better than the film's average so far, but not nearly enough to recover from its previous troubles. It should hit $100 million worldwide this weekend, but that's not much compared to its domestic run, nor compared to its production budget. More...

Early Start for Iron

May 1st, 2008

Summer unofficially starts this weekend with the release of Iron Man, which actually opened on Thursday night. There is little doubt that it will finish on top of the box office chart this weekend. The real question is how far up the all-time chart it will go. More...

Hot Mama

April 28th, 2008

The last weekend before the summer blockbuster rush turned out to be a positive one with only one film missing Thursday's prediction. This helped the overall box office to $91 million over the weekend, although that was 4% less than last weekend. April 27th, 2008

Baby Mama won the weekend with a solid $18.27 million opening, according to studio estimates released on Sunday. That's a little above expectations, and contributed to a strong weekend overall, with a projected total gross for all movies of $91 million -- 17% up from the same weekend last year. Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay also made a good start with an estimated $14.57 million, which is almost as much as Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle made in its entire theatrical run. Harold and Kumar and Baby Make Three

April 24th, 2008

Two comedies with vastly different target audiences are opening this weekend, as is a thriller with perhaps no target audience. None of the new releases look likely to light up the box office charts, especially with the looming release of Iron Man less than a week away. That said, limited expenses and lowered expectations should keep the studios happy, for the most part. More...

2008 Preview: April

April 1st, 2008

April is not a good month to release a movie. In fact, it is one of the worst months to release a movie, especially late in the month as the May mega-releases begin to loom large on the horizon and you don't have a lot of time to pull in some cash before summer starts and the competition becomes too much to handle. There are, however, a few limited release this month that have a real shot at expanding. Where in the World is Osama Bin Laden? could reach $10 million, which would be amazing for a documentary, but it is doubtful it will expand wide. More...

More...

DVD Sales - Harold and Kumar Escape to the Home Market

August 13th, 2008

New releases dominated the sales chart this week, taking 5 of the top 6 spots. This included the new number one film, Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay, which sold 406,000 units for $9.49 million consumer spending. More...

Hot Mama

April 28th, 2008

The last weekend before the summer blockbuster rush turned out to be a positive one with only one film missing Thursday's prediction. This helped the overall box office to $91 million over the weekend, although that was 4% less than last weekend. More importantly, it was 17% more than the same weekend last year and that helped reduce 2007's lead over 2008 $2.66 billion to $2.59 billion. More...
