Weekend projections: Civil War holds strong through weekend to pull off easy win

April 14, 2024

Civil War

A24’s big bet on Civil War is paying off handsomely as the action thriller is holding on strongly through the weekend to post an opening weekend now projected at $25.7 million, about 12% more than our Friday-morning prediction. Our baseline for this movie, based on the performance of director Alex Garland’s previous films, A24’s record at the box office, and similar recent sci-fi action movies, was $8.8 million. We already knew the film would top that figure going into the weekend, but this is an excellent result for an entirely new film about a controversial subject. More...

Weekend predictions: Civil War and Godzilla x Kong in close race at the top

April 12, 2024

Civil War

Our model thinks Civil War has a very slight edge over Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire going into what will be an interesting weekend at the box office. Alex Garland’s controversial action thriller will give the director his best opening weekend, beating Annihilation’s $11.1-million debut in 2018. Something over $20 million looks likely, but whether it can beat Kong remains to be seen. More...

April 9, 2024

Dune: Part Two

Excellent results for Dune: Part Two, Kung Fu Panda 4, and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire added up to a good month at the box office in March. Unfortunately, the rescheduling of some films to 2025 meant that our prediction for 2024 at the box office dipped by $200 million to $8.3 billion in our latest update. (We’re at CinemaCon in Las Vegas this week to see what the studios have up their sleeves for the rest of the year—stay tuned for updates.)

Weekend projections: Godzilla stays top as Monkey Man debuts with $10 million

April 7, 2024

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire will easily win the weekend at the box office, on a slow weekend in theaters. There are actually more positive surprises than negative ones this morning, but neither Monkey Man nor The First Omen are doing enough to move the needle for the market as a whole. More...

Weekend predictions: Godzilla should repeat on top as Monkey Man looks likely for second place

April 5, 2024

Monkey Man

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire will stay top at the box office this weekend, as it comes off a mighty $80-million opening weekend. Which movie will come next is much harder to predict, with Monkey Man looking like the favorite after Thursday’s preview numbers came in. The First Omen, meanwhile, looks like it’ll have to settle for something around fifth or sixth place. More...
