Local Flicks Compete for International Crown

December 29th, 2004

Ocean's Twelve opening in another two markets, (Mexico and Belgium) helped the heist film finish first on the international charts with $22.6 million on 5,183 screens in 46 markets. The film opened well in Belgium where it easily took first place with $1.2 million on just 75 screens. That's up nearly 40% compared to the the original, but down nearly 10% in Euros. In Mexico the film could only manage $1.8 million on 550 screens for a rather limp per screen average. However, in most markets the film is not holding up as well as the studio would have liked. For instance, in Germany the film dropped by more than 50%, in France the decline was 44%. The only exception appears to be Italy where holidays and a serious boost to screen count helped the film climb 33% to $2.9 million over the weekend. More...

DVD Releases for November 9, 2004

November 8th, 2004

Every week films get a second chance at success from the home market; or, in some cases, a first chance at success. Here is a list of wide releases, limited releases and a few from the growing TV on DVD section, including the nominees for the DVD Pick of the Week, which we'll get to in a second. This was a strange week, there was only one first run release, a few limited releases, several nearly re-releases complete with ads for upcoming movies and more than a couple really old movies mostly sold in sets. Even the best of the bunch is going to have a really narrow appeal, so instead of naming a Pick of the Week, I'll name the best of each group. Best Limited Release: Ju-On: The Grudge - Buy from Amazon. Best Ad for A Sequel: Bridget Jones's Diary - Collector's Series - Buy from Amazon. Best Box Set Containing Movies Made Before I was Born: Fritz Lang Epic Collection - Buy from Amazon. More...

Per Theatre Chart is Full of Grace

July 28th, 2004

It was a busy week on the per theatre charts, both in terms of the number of films to hit $10,000 per theatres and the number of films to hit milestones. Surprisingly, Maria Full of Grace repeated at the top of the per theatre chart with $19,562, which is a drop of only 1.5% from its opening. Next was the overall box office champ, Bourne Supremacy with a $16,595 average in 3,165 theatres. Very close behind in third place was Zatoichi with $15,276. Rounding out the $10,000 club was Home at the End of the World and Festival Express with averages of $12,946 and $12,074 respectively. More...

Monster of a Weekend

July 14th, 2004

Two other films topped $10,000 including De-Lovely with a $14,212 average and the overall box office champ, Spider-Man 2 with $10,845. More...

Movie Websites Launches for Aril 2 - April 8

April 8th, 2004

During the past week promotional websites for several movies were launched and some older ones added additional content. This week saw a deceptively poor crop of site as there were a lot of movie site launched / updated / released, more than 30 in fact. However, very few of them even came close to the being considered for this week's award. It's so bad I've spent the last 3 hours looking for a gem of movie site that I may have missed in previous weeks. In the end it was Kill Bill: Volume 2 - Official Site that won the award with only one or two other that were even briefly considered. If you know of any new movie websites not on this list feel free to e-mail me with the details. More...
