The winners of our Back to School Making Everyone See Red
contest were determined and they are...
September 2nd, 2007
While there were plenty of new releases that charted this week, the top five was nearly identical to last week. In fact, the top four were identical, which left Wild Hogs in first place with $7.81 million in rentals over the week and $17.75 million in total.

Summer is over. But that doesn't mean our box office prediction contests will slow down. This week we have prizes from The Ex, Tutankhamun, and Seeing Redd. To win one must simply predict the box office opening for Shoot 'Em Up. Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going over, will win a The Ex on DVD as well as a Seeing Redd prize pack (book, comics, stickers, etc.). Meanwhile, whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going under, will win Tutankhamun on DVD and the second Seeing Redd prize pack. Entries must be received by 10 a.m., Pacific Time on Friday to be eligible, so don't delay!

This is another week without a first run release that demands to be purchased.
That is not to say there are no first run releases coming out tomorrow, just none that need picking up.
Fortunately, TV on DVD and Special Editions were able to pick up the slack.
From the former category we have Ugly Betty - The Complete First Season and House, M.D. - Season Three that were contenders for DVD Pick of the Week.
From the latter, we have House of Games - Criterion Collection and Serenity - Collector's Edition.
And the winner is... Serenity - Collector's Edition.
Buy it early, buy it often, and maybe we'll have a sequel before too long.

There was another massive opening over the weekend, something we'll have to get used to this summer, but not all reports are glowing.
The second $100 million opening of the month helped push the overall box office up, way up, to $182 million, which is 70% higher than last weekend.
However impressive these weekly fluctuations may seem, it is the year-to-year increase of 11% that is more important.
The other number of note is 15%, which is how much higher this summer is over the record-setting pace of 2004.
That summer not only gave us Shrek 2, but also Spider-Man 2 and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
Those three movies combined for more than $1 billion, a mark this summer's top three films should be able to top.

As expected, no new release came close to challenging Spider-man 3 for top spot.
In fact, the four newcomers were even weaker than expected.
However, while this led to a 44% drop-off from last weekend, the overall box office take of $106 million was still more than 6% higher than the same weekend last year and that's the more important figure.
Next weekend there should be a big bounce as Shrek the Third should earn significantly more than that all by itself.

Not the best week for sites as there was only one that had even a chance of winning, Surf's Up - Official Site. There were a couple others that showed potential, but they will need a little more work to win.
May 10th, 2007
This is the only soft weekend in the month of May with new releases forced to fight for the scraps of last weekend's record breaker, which explains why we have four such films trying to split already weak box office prospects. However, none of these new releases has any real shot at unseating Spider-man 3, even though that film is expected to sink pretty far at the box office.

Among the more than two-dozen films on this week's list, there were a few that came very close to winning the Weekly Website Award. Of the three, Spider-Man 3 - Official Site was probably the closest to winning, but in the end was brought down by high expectations.

It's the first of May, which means it is the start of the summer blockbuster season.
This year, May is dominated by sequels, and not just sequels; there are three monster franchises releasing their third installments this month.
If these films were the only monster hits being released this month, I would assume that any of them would have little difficulty hitting $300 million; for that matter, all three would have a better than 50% shot at $400 million.
However, it seems highly unlikely to have three $400 million movies open in one month, especially given there's never been two $400 million movies to open in the same year.
But who knows, records have already fallen this year, so anything's possible.
On a side note, there is a real gap between the big three and the rest of the new releases.
There's a slim chance another sequel, 28 Weeks Later, could crack $100 million.
However, it looks like the any of the big three releases will earn twice as much as all of the other films on this list will earn combined.

Even with the extra day, it was a slow week for websites. There were a couple films to have their full sites go live this week, but in both cases there was a lack of features. The best of the list is Pathfinder - Official Site, but it's not up to the level of an award winner.

Awesome. We are finally getting some major updates to the summer blockbuster movies. The ones people are watching to see if they break records. This includes the first half of the massively interactive website for Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End - Official Site. And while the site isn't done yet, it is still more than enough to win the Weekly Website Award.
March 18th, 2007
There was quite an international flavor on the charts this past weekend with five local hits charting, and one more just missing that mark. The best of these was Lubov Morkov, which opened in sixth place with $5.38 million on 492 screens in 4 markets over the weekend and $6.28 million in total. Of this amount, $4.90 million on 427 screens was earned over the weekend in Russia while it managed $5.80 million including midweek numbers.

- Official Site
February 3rd, 2007
Busy week for limited releases and a busy week for websites, which explains why I'm wrapping things up at midnight. There wasn't a whole lot on this week's list that really attracted my attention, but I'm giving the Weekly Website Award to Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters
- Official Site
, mainly for their ... extracurricular activities of the viral marketers in Boston. And remember people, real bombs are meant to be inconspicuous, they won't sing you a song or make rude gestures at you.

This week's round of new movie release information contains the announcement for Indiana Jones 4 and more.
December 30th, 2006
Another abridged list with just the sites for movies opening this week, and two others. While there is less than a dozen films on this week list, the first one, Arthur and the Invisibles
- Official Site
, is worthy of the Weekly Website Award.
December 29th, 2006
Another busy week for new releases with eight films coming out, more than half that were obviously made for Oscar glory. While it is unlikely that any will be the big winner on Oscar night, I could see four of the films at least earning some nominations.
