DVD and Blu-ray Releases for August 19th, 2014

August 19th, 2014

There are a number of big releases on this week's list, especially if you like TV on DVD. However, there are not a lot of releases in total. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is the biggest release by a wide margin, but it is not the best. For that honor, I would have to chose Boardwalk Empire: Season 4 on Blu-ray. More...

Per Theater Chart: Maleficent Holds Off Trio of Limited Releases

June 3rd, 2014

Maleficent poster

The overall box office leader, Maleficent, also led the way on the per theater chart with an average of $17,586 in nearly 4,000 theaters. Korengal was the best of the limited releases earning $14,630 in one lone theater. Night Moves was close behind with an average of $12,050 in two theaters. The final $10,000 film was Elena with $10,341 in one theater. More...

Per Theater Chart: Eat It Up

May 14th, 2014

Chef poster

It was a good week on the per theater chart with five films in the $10,000 club, led by Chef with an average of $34,160 in six theaters, which is the third best opening average of the year so far. Palo Alto was well back, but was still strong earning an average of $15,865 in four theaters. The overall box office leader, Neighbors, was next with an average of $14,954. There were also a couple of holdovers in the $10,000 club, which is impressive. Ida held on strong earning an average of $12,223 in seven theaters, with room to keep growing. Belle expanded from 4 theaters to 45 theaters, but still managed an average of $10,825. By this time next week, it will have reached its first major milestone, with more to come. More...

Per Theater Chart: Belle Has Beautiful Debut

May 7th, 2014

Belle poster

Belle led the way on the per theater chart with an opening of just over $100,000 in four theaters for an average of $26,645. Meanwhile, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was relatively close behind with an average of $21,186 in more than 4,000 theaters. The only other film in the $10,000 club on the per theater chart was Ida, which made $55,000 in 3 theaters for an average of $18,479. More...

Weekend Estimates: The Other Woman Averts April Fourpeat for Captain America

April 27th, 2014

The Other Woman poster

By every measure, April at the box office has been dominated by Captain America: Winter Soldier, but it won't win every weekend this month, thanks to a jaunty $24.7 million debut for The Other Woman. The comedy, headlined by Cameron Diaz, Leslie Mann and Kate Upton hasn't been a huge hit with critics, but audiences are giving it a solid 70% at Rotten Tomatoes, which is plenty for a comedy (The Heat, by comparison, earns a 72% positive audience score at Rotten Tomatoes, though it started higher). A strong run in theaters certainly seems possible for The Other Woman, given its competition over the next few weeks will mostly come from male-skewing films (Moms' Night Out being the only exception). Fading Gigolo poster

Fading Gigolo debuted on top of the per theater chart with an average of $36,160 in five theaters. This is the second best per theater average for a 2014 release behind The Grand Budapest Hotel. Granted, it was well behind that film, but still in second place. Also, given the film's reviews, it won't last very long at the box office. The only other film to reach the $10,000 club was Godzilla: The Original Japanese Version, which celebrated its 60th anniversary with $10,903 in one theater. More...

Weekend Estimates: Heaven is for Real Leads Easter Openers

April 20th, 2014

Heaven is for Real poster

Moviegoers are celebrating Easter weekend by turning out in big numbers to see Heaven is for Real. The Christian-themed movie will be the biggest opener this weekend, with a very respectable $21.5 million projected Friday-to-Sunday and a theater average of $8,895. That puts it at nearly twice box office take of the widest opener this weekend, Transcendence, which is set for a very disappointing $11.15 million debut. Also opening this weekend, and similarly posting mediocre numbers is A Haunted House 2, with a projected $9.1 million from 2,310 theaters. But, with a production budget reported at $4 million, compared to $100 million for Transcendence, the horror spoof shouldn't have a hard time earning money. More...

Trailer Park Boys 3: Don't Legalize It poster

It is a busy week for limited releases, but not a good week. Arguably the best film is Gojira, which is getting a re-release for its 60th anniversary. As for new films, The Final Member and Gabrielle are earning the best reviews. However, I'm most interested in seeing Trailer Park Boys: Don't Legalize It. More...
