DVD Releases for June 3, 2008

June 3rd, 2008

This was a bad week for big movies, with not a single first run release is even worth rating a solid purchase, never mind being a contender for DVD Pick of the Week. There were a few other contenders for the title, including Dirty Harry Collection on DVD or Blu-ray. However, I found it impossible to decide which format was the better deal. Had the Blu-ray provided anything more than High Definition, or been a more reasonable price compared to the DVD, it would have been an easier choice. One of them is the DVD Pick of the Week, I just don't know which one. On a side note, there is an immense flood of Blu-ray releases, including a few I thought were coming out previously. More...

DVD Releases for May 22, 2007

May 22nd, 2007

It's the first busy week of the month, and it won't get this busy again for the rest of summer. There is literally a hundred releases mentioned on this week's list, roughly half of which are coming out to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of John Wayne. However, while there were plenty of those releases coming out, it was another classic movie to win the DVD Pick of the Week. That classic film is The Third Man - Criterion Collection - 2-Disc Edition - Buy from Amazon. More...

DVD Releases for April 17, 2007

April 16th, 2007

For the second weekend in a row I had to dig hard to find some of the DVDs on this week's list. But unlike last weekend, there are a number of DVD releases that jumped out as contenders for DVD Pick of the Week including the gritty La Haine - Criterion Collection - Buy from Amazon and the Oscar winning The Last King of Scotland - Buy from Amazon. But in the end I went with sublime humor of The Venture Bros. - Season Two - Buy from Amazon, which may seem like a lowbrow choice compared to the others above, but it earns the title of DVD Pick of the Week. International Details - Music Holds onto an Extended Note

March 11th, 2007

Music and Lyrics remained in sixth place with $5.64 million on 1645 screens in 18 markets for a total of $32.01 million internationally. The film disappointed domestically, but it appears to be making up for that softness on the international scene. The film's best opening of the weekend came from South Korea where it placed second with $2.06 million on 144 screens while it also grabbed second place in Brazil with $490,000 on 140. Holdovers were led by the U.K. where the film earned $1.09 million on 364 screens during its fourth week of release for a total of $15.71 million in that market alone. That's close to a $100 million run here, taking into account the relative sizes of the two markets. More...

Steppin' Out on Top

January 17th, 2007

Martin Luther King Jr. long weekend saw a new film take top spot while several films in the top five outperformed expectations. However, overall the box office was 3% lower from last weekend at $128 million and just 2% higher than the same weekend last year. That's likely not enough to keep up with ticket price inflation. Obviously it is too early to panic, or even make predictions, but this is not the start the industry was hoping for. More...

Night Lasts Three Weeks

January 9th, 2007

There were a couple of pleasant surprises this week, including a generally stronger than expected performance by the holdovers. Better than expected still resulted in an 18% drop-off from last weekend to $133 million, but that's 3.5% better than 2006's start. More...

New Year Hangover

January 5th, 2007

The first weekend of the year is not known for producing many hits. In fact, perhaps only the first weekend after Labor Day is worse. This year is no exception: the three wide releases are not earning strong reviews, only one new film is able to crack 2,000 theaters, and none of them have a real shot at first place. More...

2007 Preview: January

January 2nd, 2007

It is the beginning of a new year. A time to start fresh. So why do most of the new releases smell so stale? It's the January dumping ground, home to films that looked promising on paper but just didn't pan out. That doesn't mean there are no films that could be worth checking out. Out of the twelve new films opening wide this month (that's opening, not expanding), Smokin' Aces looks great and so does ... no, that's about it. Almost all of the new releases are likely to struggle at the box office and with critics alike. And to make matters worse, six of these new releases are going wide on the same weekend. This is complete madness and guarantees that at least two films that would otherwise succeed are going to fail. On the other hand, there are nearly a dozen films that have previously opened and are expanding wide (Children of Men and Pan's Labyrinth, for example), or are being re-released to grab some last minute Oscar buzz, (The Queen and The Last King of Scotland, among others). This makes for an incredibly busy month, but not one that will likely produce many hits.

Two additional notes... Firstly, Letters from Iwo Jima is expanding throughout the month but likely won't go wide until February. Secondly, The Dead Girl has a planned expansion on the 19th, but after struggling in limited release since opening last weekend, this seems unlikely. More...

More...
