Synopsis

Anton is a doctor who commutes between his home in an idyllic town in Denmark, and his work at an African refugee camp. In these two very different worlds, he and his family are faced with conflicts that lead them to difficult choices between revenge and forgiveness. Anton and his wife Marianne, who have two young sons, are separated and struggling with the possibility of divorce. Their older, ten-year-old son Elias is being bullied at school, until he is defended by Christian, a new boy who has just moved from London with his father, Claus. Christian's mother recently lost her battle with cancer, and Christian is greatly troubled by her death. Elias and Christian quickly form a strong bond, but when Christian involves Elias in a dangerous act of revenge with potentially tragic consequences, their friendship is tested and lives are put in danger. Ultimately, it is their parents who are left to help them come to terms with the complexity of human emotions, pain and empathy.

DVD and Blu-ray Releases for August 30th, 2011

August 30th, 2011

Summer is officially over, both at the box office and on the home market. Granted, the theatrical releases are still really weak, but the TV on DVD releases are starting to become overwhelming. There are several such releases that are worth picking up, but none rise to the level of Pick of the Week. For that I went with The Coen Brothers Blu-ray Box Set. However, if you've made the leap to Blu-ray, then The Nightmare Before Christmas 3-D Blu-ray Combo Pack is worth an honorable mention. Meanwhile, there's a film called Norwegian Ninja coming out on DVD that has cult classic written all over it. I really hope the screener arrives soon. More...

Per Theater Chart: State Makes Senna See Red

August 24th, 2011

Red State continued its run of special engagements this past weekend earning $25,800 in one theater. The only other film to reach the $10,000 mark was Senna, which earned an average of $11,365 in 14 theaters. More...

Blame Canada for the number of Limited Releases

April 22nd, 2011

It's a busy week for limited releases with more than a dozen films on this week's list, including a very large Canadian contingent. There are two films opening in limited release in Canada, two Canadian films opening in limited release in the United States, and another where the characters are on a road trip to Canada. One of these films, Incendies, is the best bet for the weekend, while POM Wonderful Presents: The Greatest Movie Ever Sold is also worth checking out. More...

Four Hops to the Top of the Per Theater Chart

April 5th, 2011

The Four Times led a group of three films that topped the $10,000 mark on the per theater chart this week with $16,192 in its lone theater. My Perestroika was next with $13,498, also in one theater. Meanwhile, the overall box office leader, Hop, was the final member of the $10,000 club with an average of $10,490. More...

Weekend Estimates: Hop Hits

April 3rd, 2011

Universal have a shot at posting the biggest opening of 2011, thanks to a stronger than expected opening for Hop, which is currently estimated to open with $38.118 million. If that number holds up, it would just beat the $38.079 million opening enjoyed by Rango at the beginning of March. Encouraging as that performance is, it also highlights the overall weakness of the market in 2011, as four movies had opened over $40 million by this time last year, and Clash of the Titans debuted with $61 million the first weekend of April, making for another tough year-to-year comparison. The weekend as a whole will likely be down around 27% from last year, continuing the industry's losing streak into the second quarter. More...

These are Limited Releases?

April 1st, 2011

Normally limited releases open in only a couple theaters and even six theaters is quite a lot compared to the average. However, this weekend, we have a film opening in nearly a dozen theaters, another opening in a few dozen theaters, and even one opening in more than 100 theaters. It's always risky to open a film in that many theaters, and to make matters worse, most of the films opening in limited release this week are not earning spectacular reviews. But let's hope we have continued success on the limited release front. More...

Awards Season: And the Oscars go to... The King's Speech for Best Picture

February 27th, 2011

The Oscar are being handed out tonight and we will be going over the winners as they are announced and giving a few reactions, perhaps there will be a few surprises along the way. This story will be updated as the winners are announced, so check back throughout the evening to see if The King's Speech will be this year's winner, or if The Social Network will manage the upset. Plus there are many other potentially interesting results ahead. More...

Awards Season: Oscars Offer a Truly Regal Performance

January 25th, 2011

The Oscar nominations were announced this morning, thus ending months of speculation. Along with a (very) few surprises, the list of nominees is mostly a case of Deja Vu. Leading the way, as it has so often this year, was The King's Speech, with 12 nominations, including six in seven of the most prestigious categories (Best Picture, Director, Screenplay, and the four acting categories). But it was far from the only multi-nominated film on the list. More...
