Synopsis
Higher Ground depicts the landscape of a tight-knit spiritual community thrown off-kilter when one of their own begins to question her faith. Inspired by Carolyn S. Briggs' memoir, This Dark Word, the film tells the story of a thoughtful woman's struggles with belief, love, and trust - in human relationships as well as in God.

It's a pretty good week on the home market, for this time of year, with a number of releases that are worth checking out. This includes big budget releases, like Moneyball on Blu-ray Combo Pack, as well as TV on DVD releases like Doctor Who: Story 71: Invasion of the Dinosaurs and Story 83: The Android Invasion, as well as smaller releases like Higher Ground on Blu-ray Combo Pack. Unfortunately, it's not a particularly deep week for releases, and it isn't long before we start getting to DVDs and Blu-rays that would be ignored during a typically busy week. Not only that, but I'm still waiting for screeners for a number of bigger releases. One of these, Boardwalk Empire: Season One on Blu-ray, is the most likely candidate for Pick of the Week.

Normally I disregard weather effects on the box office; after all, even big storms generally only affect a small fraction of the population of the domestic market. However, Irene caused theaters in New York City to be closed for Saturday and Sunday, which had a huge impact on limited releases and none of the new ones reached that $10,000 mark on the per theater chart. Red State did earn that much in its lone theater over the weekend, while the closest any new release came was Higher Ground with an average of $7,165 in three theaters.

With many East Coast theaters closed on Saturday and Sunday thanks to Hurricane Irene, and a weak selection of new movies in the first place, this is shaping up to be one of the worst weekends of 2011. In fact, it could end up as the worst, depending on how Sunday's business works out. There's a lot of uncertainty in this week's estimates because of incomplete reports for Saturday and the unknown impact of the storm in the North East. One thing seems certain, though: The Help will top the chart again. It is expected to earn another $14.3 million, according to Disney, for a total of $96.6 million. It is still enjoying the best per theater average in the top ten, so it will stay in theaters for a while.

While there are many limited releases coming out this week, very few of them are earning good reviews. It could be a bad week on the per theater chart. Higher Ground has the best shot at success, but Circumstance could do well. Meanwhile, Tucker and Dale vs. Evil opens On Demand today before hitting theaters next month and coming out on DVD and Blu-ray in November. It looks awesome and I can't wait to see it.
