Synopsis

The story of a legendary Army Captain, who after stern resistance, reluctantly agrees to escort a dying Cheyenne war chief and his family back to tribal lands. Making the harrowing and perilous journey from Fort Berringer, an isolated Army outpost in New Mexico, to the grasslands of Montana, the former rivals encounter a young widow, whose family was murdered on the plains. Together, they must join forces to overcome the punishing landscape, hostile Comanche and vicious outliers that they encounter along the way.

Our DVD and Blu-ray sales estimates are based on weekly retail surveys, which we use to build a weekly market share estimate for each title we are tracking. The market share is converted into a weekly sales estimate based on industry reports on the overall size of the market, including reports published in Media Play News.

For example, if our weekly retail survey estimates that a particular title sold 1% of all units that week, and the industry reports sales of 1,500,000 units in total, we will estimate 15,000 units were sold of that title. The consumer spending estimate is based on the average sales price for the title in the retailers we survey.

We refine our estimates from week to week as more data becomes available. In particular, we adjust weekly sales figures for the quarter once the total market estimates are published by the Digital Entertainment Group. Figures will therefore fluctuate each week, and totals for individual titles can go up or down as we update our estimates.

Because sales figures are estimated based on sampling, they will be more accurate for higher-selling titles.

Full financial estimates for this film, including domestic and international box office, video sales, video rentals, TV and ancillary revenue are available through our research services. For more information, please contact us at research@the-numbers.com.

Home Market Releases for April 24th, 2018

April 25th, 2018

Paddington 2

Paddington 2 is the biggest release of the week and clearly at least one of the best. However, it isn’t the only film that’s a Pick of the Week contender. Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story, Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid, and others were all in contention for that honor. In the end, the Paddington 2 Blu-ray Combo Pack earned that title. More...

Home Market Releases for April 10th, 2018

April 10th, 2018

Phantom Thread

The last box office hit of 2017, The Greatest Showman, hits the home market this week. There are also a couple of Awards Season contenders, but for the most part, it is another slow week. Phantom Thread on Blu-ray is the clear Pick of the Week winner. Meanwhile, Molly’s Game on Blu-ray Combo Pack is the only real competition. More...

Theater Averages: Exits is Golden with $11,719, Fifty Shades Freed Settles for Silver

February 13th, 2018

Weekend Wrap-Up: Jumanji Rumbles Back to the Top with $10.93 million

February 6th, 2018

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle earned first place for the fourth time over the weekend with $10.93 million, while Maze Runner: The Death Cure was a close second with $10.47 million. This left Winchester in third place with $9.31 million, but it could have been much worse. Overall, the weekend fell 33% from last weekend with $95 million. More importantly, is 3.6% lower than the same weekend last year. 2018 lost its small lead over 2017 before the weekend and it is now 0.8% or $8 million below last year’s pace at $1.04 billion to $1.05 billion. It’s going to get a lot worse next weekend, due to the misalignment in holidays, but I think 2018 will quickly recover after that. More...

Weekend Predictions: Winchester Takes Aim at the Competition

February 1st, 2018

Winchester

It’s Super Bowl weekend and the only film attempting to compete with the sporting event is Winchester. Unfortunately, its nearly noon on Thursday and there are still no reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. This means Maze Runner: The Death Cure and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle will be in a race for first place over the weekend, while Winchester will have to settle for third place. This weekend last year, Rings was the biggest new release of the week. It wasn’t a hit, but it was bigger than any film this week will be, preventing 2018 from winning the year-over-year competition. More...

Weekend Wrap-Up: Maze Runner Leads 2018 to a Photo Finish with $24.17 million

January 30th, 2018

Maze Runner: The Death Cure

Maze Runner: The Death Cure beat expectations by a little bit with $24.17 million. In fact, every film in the top five this this weekend, except one, topped expectations, including the other new release, Hostiles. This helped the overall box office rise 2.6% from last week. It did fall 0.8% from last year, but 2018 is still ahead of 2017 by $18 million or 2.1% at $908 million to $890 million. More...

Weekend Estimates: Maze Runner Trilogy Ends with $23.5 Million Opening

January 28th, 2018

Maze Runner: The Death Cure

The delayed final film in the Maze Runner trilogy, The Death Cure, will open with $23.5 million, per Fox’s Sunday morning estimate. With another $82 million overseas so far, the film will have earned a little over $100 million by the end of the weekend, and its early international pace looks a little better than The Scorch Trials, which amassed $78 million over its first two weekends back in 2015. (Scorch Trials had a more staggered release, making a direct comparison difficult.) More...

Friday Estimates: The Maze Runner Franchise Sputters in the end with $8.4 million

January 27th, 2018

Maze Runner: The Death Cure

As expected, Maze Runner: The Death Cure opened in first place on Friday. The film pulled in $8.4 million during its opening day, which is about 30% lower than its immediate predecessor. If this film has the same legs, it will open with $23 million during the weekend. I think that seems likely, as the two films have earned nearly identical reviews and both films earned a B plus from CinemaScore. This should be enough for the film to nearly match its $62 million production budget domestically, so if it can top $150 million worldwide, it will break even. More...

Thursday Night Previews: Maze Runner Chases Down $1.5 Million

January 26th, 2018

Maze Runner: The Death Cure

Maze Runner: The Death Cure started its box office run with $1.5 million in previews. By comparison, the first film earned $1.1 million, while the second pulled in $1.7 million. If this film had the same legs as its immediate predecessor, then it will open with between $26 million and $27 million. I think its opening weekend will be a little bit lower, as the entire genre is off its peak, but this is still better than our prediction and enough to keep the studio happy. More...

Weekend Predictions: Can Maze Runner Sprint to the Finish Line?

January 25th, 2018

Maze Runner: The Death Cure

Maze Runner: The Death Cure, is the final installment of the Maze Runner trilogy and is the only wide release of the week. It is guaranteed first place, unless something horrible happens, but there’s almost no chance it will live up to the other two installments. Hostiles is expanding wide, but I don’t have a lot of faith in the film’s box office chances. It is almost the exact wrong time to expand. This weekend last year, Split had a surprisingly good hold earning $25 million, while four other films earned more than $10 million at the box office. That’s not going to happen this year, so 2018 will lose in the year-over-year comparison. It shouldn’t be a complete blowout, on the other hand. More...

Theater Averages Chart is Hostile Territory

January 23rd, 2018

Hostiles

No film reached the $10,000 club. In fact, Hostiles was the best film with an average of $6,666 in 49 theaters. Mary And The Witch’s Flower looks like it had a better weekend; however, its numbers are complicated. The film earned $1.17 million during its Thursday special showings in 573 theaters for an average of $2,037. Then it earned $330,000 in 161 theaters over the weekend in regular screenings for an average of $2,050. This shows that Anime fans are not numerous, but they are very eager for special screenings. Theater Averages: The Post Posts Top Marks with average of $58,446 / $84,673

December 27th, 2017

The Post

The Post dominated the Christmas weekend, earning an average of $58,446 in nine theaters, $84,673 if you include Christmas Day. The second best result of the four-day weekend was Phantom Thread, which earned an average of $31,818 in four theaters on Christmas Day alone. Last week’s winner, The Last Jedi, earned an average of $16,911 during its second weekend of release. The final two films in the $10,000 club were I, Tonya and Along With The Gods: The Two Worlds with averages of $11,169 and $10,914 respectively. More...

Weekend Estimates: Last Jedi Easily Holds Off Five Newcomers

December 24th, 2017

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

It’s a very crowded weekend, to say the least, in theaters, with five new wide releases already playing, and another joining the fray tomorrow. The Last Jedi is unperturbed by the competition, and will come out an easy winner, according to studio estimates released on Sunday. Its $68.486 million projected 3-day gross takes it to $365 million after 10 days in release. Among its new records this weekend, it became the 3rd-fastest film to earn $350 million at the domestic box office, and will have the 3rd-best Christmas weekend. All this is in spite of the fact that takings are expected to be down significantly today as everyone prepares for, or starts celebrating, the holiday. More...

Golden Exits

Golden Exits earned first place with $11,719 in its lone theater. The only other film in the $10,000 club was Fifty Shades Freed with an average of $10,234. More...

Theater Averages: Padmaavat Spices Up the Theater Average Chart

More...

It’s Christmas weekend, and, while there are a large number of wide releases, there are not that many limited ones. Some of them, like The Post, are going for Oscar glory. Others just feel like they are being dumped into theaters to disappear. More...
