Amityville Scares Slump Into Submission

October 15th, 2005

The Amityville Horror won the race for top spot on the rental charts with $8.78 million in DVD rentals and $520,000 in VHS rentals for a combined total of $9.30 million. This result, plus the rest of the competition, helped pull the rental market out of its extended slump. More...

DVD Releases for October 4, 2005 - Part 1

October 3rd, 2005

Every week films get a second chance at success from the home market; or, in some cases, a first chance at success. Here is a list of wide releases, limited releases, classics and a few from the growing TV on DVD section. It's another week where no first run releases stand out as being must haves, but at least there are some special editions worth picking up, namely The Fly - Collector's Edition - Buy from Amazon. One last note, as I previously mentioned, I lost power this past week and that set me a day behind. Now normally it takes a couple of days to complete this list, so instead of being a day late with several columns I decided to make sure the rest of the columns were on time and split this one in half. So the first half the list will be published today, and the other half tomorrow. More...

Enron's Stock Rises

April 26th, 2005

Only a single film made it into the $10,000 club this weekend as Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room opened with a huge $76,639 in just 3 theaters for an average of $25,546. Last year was a big year for documentaries at the box office, but this year it's been slow so far; hopefully this film's run can help turn it around. More...

Everybody was Still Kung-Fu Fighting

April 19th, 2005

Last week's winner on the per theater chart, Kung Fu Hustle, was able to repeat on top of the charts. The film dropped a mere 8% to $35,373, and this bodes very well for its wide release this Friday. Next on the list was the new film It's All Gone Pete Tong, which earned $19,717 in its lone theater, and was slightly ahead of the average for House of D at $18,186 average in two theaters. Rounding out the $10,000 club was the long-term release, Short Cut to Nirvana: Kumbh Mela, which has been in theaters for half-a-year and earned $11,102 in its lone theater this week. More...

April 15th, 2005

It's a rather weak week for limited releases, with no film on the list earning overall positive reviews. And while a couple should perform well, it looks like Kung Fu Hustle's position on top of the per theater charts is very safe. More...
