In 1925, the nation of China is divided by infighting, and Japan has become the most powerful force in Asia. With the city of Shanghai torn in half by international conflict, the popular nightclub "Casablanca" has become a hotbed of spies, mobsters, English officials and the Japanese military- all looking to gain control of the country, with little regard for what happens to its citizenry. Into this den of intrigue enters Chen Zhen, who has returned to China after fighting alongside the Allied forces in Europe, bringing some dark secrets from his past along with him. During the day, he's known as "Qi", and appears to be just another wealthy playboy. But at night, he takes to the street as a masked warrior, determined to subvert the Japanese invasion while becoming entangled with the sultry Kiki, who has a dangerous secret of her own. When his past catches up to him, Chen Zhen is faced with near impossible odds- but his skills are formidable, and he's up to the challenge.

DVD and Blu-ray Releases for June 14th, 2011

June 13th, 2011

It's actually a rather busy week for DVD / Blu-ray releases, at least for the summertime, with four first run releases coming out. Granted, those four films averaged just 21% positive reviews, so it is certainly a matter of quantity over quality. Unfortunately, the quantity of first run releases appears to have scared away quality alternatives and there are not a lot of top notch releases. There are a few that are with picking up, some of which are for limited audiences, but as far as Pick of the Week contenders go, there are none. However, True Blood: Season Three arrived late, and I'm giving the Pick of the Week honor to the Blu-ray. More...

Evil is Profitable on the Per Theater Chart

April 26th, 2011

Evil Bong 3D earned $19,315 in its lone theater to lead the way on the per theater chart, and clearly I've slipped into an alternate dimension. Actually, I'm very happy with this film's success, as it's distributed by Full Moon Features, the same company that released Puppetmaster and countless other low-budget films I've been a fan of. Second place went to The Double Hour with $14,990, which is less than 1% lower than its opening weekend. Madea's Big Happy Family was the only wide release to reach the $10,000 mark, and it was close at $10,957. There is one confusing release, Incendies, which earned over $60,000 in 13 theaters, if you include Canada. However, if you just look at its U.S. opening, it earned $50,679 in 3 theaters for an average of $16,893, which is much more impressive. More...

Blame Canada for the number of Limited Releases

April 22nd, 2011

It's a busy week for limited releases with more than a dozen films on this week's list, including a very large Canadian contingent. There are two films opening in limited release in Canada, two Canadian films opening in limited release in the United States, and another where the characters are on a road trip to Canada. One of these films, Incendies, is the best bet for the weekend, while POM Wonderful Presents: The Greatest Movie Ever Sold is also worth checking out. More...
