DVD and Blu-ray Releases for November 23rd, 2010

November 22nd, 2010

This Friday is Black Friday, but there's a lull on the home market with not a whole lot of great releases. (This is the usual pattern for Thanksgiving.) The biggest hit coming out is The Expendables, which should top the chart, while there are a number of smaller releases that are in contention for Pick of the Week. The best of these is Metropolis: The Complete Metropolis, which comes out on Blu-ray this week after being released on DVD last week. More...

Featured Blu-ray Review: Tyler Perry Collection

November 21st, 2010

For quite a while, most Tyler Perry films have been released on the home market, in standard definition with no Blu-ray release. This week, the studio is rectifying that situation and releasing his entire back catalog on High Definition. That's five titles, starting with... More...

Lack of New Releases Maintain Failure's Winning Streak

July 22nd, 2006

For the third weekend in a row, Failure to Launch topped the rental charts as it added $5.77 million over the week for a total of $25.18 million after three. More...

Clear Sailing for Launch

July 15th, 2006

A near total lack of competition allowed Failure to Launch to remain in first place with $8.87 million over the week for a two-week total of $19.41 million. More...

Spectacular Launch

July 8th, 2006

Failure to Launch wasn't the only new DVD release to chart this week, but it was far and away the best. The film took first place with $10.42 million, which was nearly double its nearest competition. More...

Successful Launch fails to Lift Box Office

March 13th, 2006

Only one of the four new films beat expectations over the weekend, and that left the box office hurting. Overall, the total for the weekend was $110 million, which was 6.8% higher than last weekend, but since last weekend was Oscar weekend, this is hardly an impressive result. More importantly, it was 4.7% lower than the same weekend last year. More...

Reunion Repeats despite Tumultuous Tumble

March 6th, 2006

It was another bad week as practically ever film in the top five missed expectations, some by wide margins. The overall box office was down to $103 million for the weekend, which is 14.2% lower than last weekend and 16.3% lower than the same weekend last year. However, a lot of that has to do with the Oscars. Year-to-date, 2006 has brought in $1.39 billion in box office revenue, which is just behind last's years pace of $1.40 billion. More...

Oscars Weekend Weakens Box Office Potential

March 3rd, 2006

It's Oscar weekend and while people will be celebrating the best movies have to offer, they won't be doing it in a movie theatre. There's usually a huge drop-off in ticket sales over Oscar weekend, especially on Sunday. The only groups that are mostly unaffected are teens and young men and that explains why all four movies opening wide this weekend are aimed at one of those two groups. More...

Family Comes First... on Per Theatre Charts

February 28th, 2006

The overall box office champ, Madea's Family Reunion, also won the weekend Per Theatre Average race with $13,688. Second place went to Tsotsi with and average of $12,721 in six theatres. More...

Family Tops Tepid Box Office

February 27th, 2006

Despite Madea's Family Reunion beating expectations by a substantial margin, the overall box office was still lower for the weekend, hitting just $120 million. That's down by 7.1% from last week, and nearly 2% from the same weekend last year. This means all the gains earned in January were erased in February. More...

Perry Hopes Reunion Returns him to the Top

February 24th, 2006

Three films open in some form of wide release this weekend. The widest of which only managed to secure 2319 theatres, and that was for a film that wasn't fully expected to earn a wide release at all. But it should be Madea's Family Reunion and its urban appeal that should lead the way this weekend. More...

Movie Website Updates for February 17 - February 23

February 23rd, 2006

During the past week promotional websites for several movies were launched and some older ones added additional content. Just when I thought the slump was over, we have the shortest list in a few weeks. The best site of the week was Brick - Official Site, which helped sell the movie well and that is the most important job of a movie site. More...

2006 Preview: February

February 1st, 2006

Looking at the new crop of movies coming out this month, one has to wonder if January's dumping ground wasn't extended a month. Of the roughly dozen movies on this list, none look like they have what it takes to be a major hit, although there should be a few midlevel ones. There are also a couple of interesting stories to keep track of. For instance, will Firewall be Harrison Ford's triumphant return to the top of the box office charts? Will Night Watch earn a wide release? Just how bad will The Pink Panther be? More...
