Synopsis

First, it was a mine that exploded in the middle of the Moroccan desert. Years later, it was a stray bullet that lodged in his brain... Bazil doesn't have much luck with weapons. The first made him an orphan, the second holds him on the brink of sudden and instant death. Released from the hospital, Bazil is homeless. Luckily, our inspired and gentle-natured dreamer is adopted by a motley crew of secondhand dealers living in a veritable Ali Baba's cave, whose talents and aspirations are as surprising as they are diverse: Remington, Calculator, Buster, Slammer, Elastic Girl, Tiny Pete and Mama Chow. One day, walking by two huge buildings, Bazil recognizes the logos of the weapons manufacturers that caused his hardship. With the help of his faithful gang of wacky friends he sets out to get revenge. A gang of underdogs battling heartless industrial giants, they relive the battle of David and Goliath, with all the imagination and fantasy of Buster Keaton...

DVD and Blu-ray Releases for December 14th, 2010

December 13th, 2010

This week we have the last of the major summer blockbusters hitting the home market, and not only did Despicable Me earn $250 million domestically and more than $500 million worldwide, it also earned amazing reviews. This makes it an obvious contender for Pick of the Week. Unfortunately, the screener is late, and I hate to award that honor to a release when this is the case. As far as its competition is concerned, there are two main releases vying for that title: The Quintessential Guy Maddin! on DVD and The Town on Blu-ray. Despite my well-documented pro-Canada bias, I'm giving it to the latter. More...

Per Theater Chart: Kids' Legs More Than Just All Right

July 20th, 2010

The Kids are All Right continued to lead the way on the Per Theater Chart with a stunning average of $28,009 in 38 theaters that helped it earn more than $1 million over the weekend. Its per theater average did fall 40%; however, its theater count rose from 7 to 38, so this is actually a very good result. The only other film in the $10,000 club was the overall box office leader, Inception, with an average of $16,557. That's a little below expectations, but if it holds really well, it might remain in the $10,000 club next week. More...

Agora Leads Crowded Field on Per Theater Chart

June 2nd, 2010

Agora opened on top of the per theater chart with an average of $16,631 in two theaters. This is enough to suggest that it has some potential to expand, but not enough to suggest that it will put a dent in its $70 million production budget. Solitary Man remained strong with an average of $14,047 in six theaters. It too should expand. The Cremaster Cycle made an appearance on the chart with $11,796 in one theater, while Micmacs was close behind with an average of $10,688 in four theaters. More...

3-Day Weekend Estimates: Shrek Triumphs Over Carrie and Friends

May 30th, 2010

A weaker-than-expected debut by Sex and the City 2 will leave Shrek Forever After the comfortable winner over Memorial Day Weekend, according to studio estimates released on Sunday. Shrek's 3-day projected gross is $43.345 million, which takes it to $133.1 million after ten days. That's not, in itself, a spectacular result, since it's a decline of 39% from a soft-ish opening weekend on one of the biggest box office weekends of the year, but it puts the ogre movie over $10 million ahead of Sex over three days -- a lead that will get bigger once Monday's numbers are in.
