Synopsis

Based on Margaret Atwood’s bestselling book, Jennifer Baichwal's feature documentary Payback offers a look at how debt is a central organizing principle in our lives - influencing relationships, societies, governing structures and the very fate of this planet. Payback traces the links between debtor and creditor across centuries and cultures - in politics, literature, religion, sociology and economics - showing how debt has become an innate part of the human experience.
