DVD Sales - WALL-E Sales Out of this World

December 1st, 2008

WALL-E was the biggest new release of the week, as it topped the sales chart with an impressive 6.20 million units sold and $112.07 million in consumer retail spending. This is the best opening week for a DVD since At World's End sold more than 8 million units during its opening week last year and it instantly puts the DVD into second place for the year. More...

DVD Releases for November 18, 2008 - Part II

November 18th, 2008

It's a weird week for the DVD release report. According to Amazon, seven of the top ten releases come from two movie: WALL-E and Tropic Thunder. Add in the Spanish language edition and there are five versions of the former movie coming out this week, including the 3-Disc DVD and the 3-Disc Blu-ray, either one of which is worthy of the DVD Pick of the Week. The overall group of releases feels weaker than last week, but it is more than enough that it had to be split into two parts. Part one can be found here. More...

Thunder Rumbles to the Top

August 18th, 2008

We finally had a new box office champion last weekend, as Tropic Thunder earned top spot and dethrowned The Dark Knight. Additionally, overall box office receipts of $124 million were stronger than they have been in a few weeks. That's 3.5% higher than last weekend, but sadly just over 4% lower than the same weekend last year. Year-to-date, 2008 is still behind 2007, but by less than a percent, $6.34 billion to $6.37 billion. More...

Olympic-Sized Box Office Haul

August 11th, 2008

Four. The Dark Knight has reigned on top of the box office charts for four weekends now. The last film to last on top so long was Return of the King, which opened more than four years ago. That said, while The Dark Knight is dominating, the new releases are not pulling their weight and the overall box office slipped to $120 million over the weekend, which was 21% lower than last weekend, and 22% lower than the same weekend last year. Year-to-date, 2008 has earned $6.14 billion, which is lower than 2007's pace but by less than 1%, as this time last year movies had earned $6.17 billion at the box office. More...

Movie Website Reviews for Weekend of August 8, 2008

August 9th, 2008

Not the best week for websites, but not the worst. While the best of the best, The Pineapple Express - Official Site, is not one of the best sites I've seen. But there are almost no movie sites that are missing or below acceptable levels. More...

Will Pineapple Defeat Batman?

August 6th, 2008

Like last week, this week we have two more new wide releases, and like last week, The Dark Knight has a shot at retaining its crown. Also of note, the two new releases are coming out tonight because the Olympics are starting on Friday and they want to avoid going up against the Olympic opening ceremonies... Wait... People watch the Olympic opening ceremonies? More...

2008 Preview: August

August 1st, 2008

Summer usually comes screeching to a halt early in August, usually by the second weekend in August. However, this year we could have a $100 million hit opening each of the first three weeks. Or we could have no $100 million hits opening during the whole month. On the other end, there are a number of releases that probably looked good on paper, but failed to live up to their potential, not to mention a few that could not have looked good, even on paper. (I'm looking at you, Disaster Movie.) More...
