Synopsis
Kate and Charlie are a young married couple whose bond is built on a mutual love of music, laughter and drinking... especially the drinking. When Kate's drinking leads her to dangerous places and her job as a school teacher is put into jeopardy, she decides to join AA and get sober. With the help of her friend and sponsor Jenny, and the vice principal at her school, the awkward, but well intentioned, Mr. Davies, Kate takes steps toward improving her health and life. Sobriety isn't as easy as Kate had anticipated though. Her new lifestyle brings to the surface a troubling relationship with her mother, facing the lies she's told her employer and calls into question whether or not her relationship with Charlie is built on love or is just boozy diversion from adulthood.

There are not many first run releases coming out on the home market this week, but two of them, Life of Pi and Rise of the Guardians, rose to Pick of the Week status. For that honor, we have to turn to an older release, Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, which celebrated its 25th Anniversary by coming out on Blu-ray for the first time. Yes, it is shovelware, but it is still the best movie on this week's list. If you don't have the DVD already and really don't like Pan & Scan, you might want to wait till Disney fixes the mix-up with the DVD portion of the Combo Pack.

The Independent Spirit Awards has a special place in the Awards Season. The nominations are the unoffficial start of Awards Season, but the actual awards aren't given out until Oscar weekend, so they are the beginning at the end of Awards Season. They also help out a lot of limited releases that would otherwise not get enough buzz, although they are not so good at predicting Oscar wins. This year, two films tied for most nominations, Moonrise Kingdom and The Silver Linings Playbook, both of which earned five nominations. They weren't the only films to earn multiple nominations though.

There was only one film to crack the $10,000 mark on this week's Per Theater Chart. Middle Of Nowhere managed that feat with $68,000 in six theaters for an average of $11,318. Simon and the Oaks came very close with $9,963 in its one theater.

It's a very busy week for limited releases with a dozen films on this week's list. There are few that are earning good buzz or strong reviews, and even a couple earning both. Smashed is probably the film with the best chance at earning mainstream success. The Big Picture, Middle of Nowhere, and Gaybe are also earning overwhelmingly positive reviews.
