DVD Releases for April 22, 2008

April 21st, 2008

It's a slow week by nearly every measure: big releases, overall quality, overall quantity, spotlight reviews, etc. This is great news for me since recently a package arrived with several DVDs, all of which were late. I'm not quite completely caught up, but I am very close. As for this week's releases, there were only a handful of releases that were even in contention for DVD Pick of the Week. Both The Savages - DVD and The Orphanage - DVD or Blu-ray earned excellent reviews, but their home market releases were only average. Cloverfield - DVD wasn't as good a movie, but the DVD had the best combination of movie quality and special features. The specter of a Blu-ray release notwithstanding, it is the DVD Pick of the Week. Contest - King of the Box Office Prognosticators

April 4th, 2008

The widest release of next week should be Street Kings, and it is this week's target film. In order to win, one must simply predict Street Kings's three-day, opening weekend box office. Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going over, will win Lions for Lambs on DVD, Jimmy Carter: Man from Plains on DVD, and Steep on DVD. Meanwhile, whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going under, will also win Lions for Lambs on DVD, Jimmy Carter: Man from Plains on DVD, and Steep on DVD. Entries must be received by 10 a.m., Pacific Time on Friday to be eligible, so don't delay! More...

DVD Releases for March 25, 2008

March 24th, 2008

According to Amazon, there are more than 700 DVDs coming out this week; however, this is certainly a case of quantity over quality and I'm having trouble finding 30 releases worth mentioning. It is also a rather light week when it comes to spotlight reviews with only three of them. To end the trifecta of weakness, there are not a lot that are even in contention for DVD Pick of the Week. War Made Easy is arguably the best movie of the week, but the DVD is devoid of extras. Likewise, Bonnie and Clyde on Blu-ray is a good choice, but there are no exclusive features and the Ultimate Collector's Edition has more physical features. Another contender was PTU - Police Tactical Unit, which is a strong movie with equally strong extras. However, in the end none of these releases really lived up to the title of DVD Pick of the Week. DVD Releases for March 18, 2008

March 18th, 2008

The movie business is cyclical with peaks (summer season and the winter holidays), as well as lulls (September and January). This translates into the peaks and lulls in the home market as well, just three to four months later. We are finally coming out of the latest home market quiet period and the biggest hit of the Christmas Holidays is hitting the home market. However it is not the DVD Pick of the Week. That honor goes to Enchanted, which is worth picking up on DVD but is a must-have on Blu-ray. More...

Juno Finds Treasure on the Per Theater Chart

December 27th, 2007

Only two films crossed the $10,000 mark this past weekend, and they were at the opposite ends of the spectrum. National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets topped the list earning an average of $11,687 in 3,832 theaters while earning first place on the overall box office charts as well. On the other hand, it was a limited release, Juno, that scored the only other $10,000 run with an average of $11,230 in just over 300 theaters. More...
