Budget Note

Cleopatra's budget was much discussed and disputed before and after its release, with figures quoted that veriously included original development of the project, the main production phase and/or the reshoots of battle scenes, other pick-up shots, and post-production. Some sleuthing by Rob Lawson suggests that the total figure of $44 million breaks down as $7 million during the initial phase of production under Rouben Mamoulian, $35 million for the main production under Joseph L. Mankiewicz, and a further $2 million on the battle scenes, pick-up shots and post-production. These expenditures during different phases of the troubled production account for the differing budget figures that appear in different sources.
