Tell-Tale Heart Meets Fatal Attraction
A Review of What Lies Beneath

by Nonia Bidness

Pros: Good acting by the 2 stars, entertaining.
Cons: No real substance, just fun.

A friend of mine called this movie "empty calories", and I think that's a very apt description... but you know what? Empty calories may not nourish but they sure can entertain! I love the heck out of a good hot fudge sundae! You won't leave this movie feeling enlightened or with much to ponder, but that doesn't mean you won't enjoy it!

Remember that scene in Fatal Atttraction when Glenn Close sprang up from under the water in the bathtub and the whole theater audience uttered a startled yelp in unison? Well, this movie has scenes like that over and over. And guess what? Some of them DO involve the bathtub!

I have no intention of ruining anything here, because I think it's a movie people will continue to flock to - this is only the second film we've seen in this town that has sold out a showing (X-Men was the first). Mostly, if you saw the preview, you have a good idea of the whole story anyway, but there is a bit more to it than what we were shown beforehand. I bet you will still jump out of your seat a few times, anyway!

Part of the reason this film works, when it could have ended up a cheesy low-grade horror flick, is the top notch acting of Michelle Pfeiffer and Harrison Ford. The suspense seems to go a little slowly at times - I did find myself wondering if the movie was ever going to end. But looking back, I see that a lot of the time when nothing seemed to be happening, subtle things were happening that would make sense later (we figured out some of them in the car on the way home!).

This isn't as eerie as I thought it would be, just has those good ol' startle you and make you scream moments til you're almost laughing about them!

Fun for a rainy afternoon or an evening of cuddling with a sweetheart. My rating is 2.75 stars!
Bang for the Buck: Go to the half-price matinee.
Movie Mood: Scary Movie.
Recommends to friends? Yes.
