A Note on Budget

Jonathan Caouette originally made Tarnation for $218 using Mac iMovie software. As noted by Patricia Aufderheide and Peter Jaszi in Untold Stories: Creative Consequences of the Rights Clearance Culture for Documentary Filmmakers, clearing rights to music and images used in the film made the total cost to bring the movie to theaters $400,000. We use that figure as our official budget.
