DVD Releases for February 20, 2007

February 20th, 2007

It's not a great week for DVD releases. While there are plenty worth talking about, few combine a high quality movie with top-notch extras. Because of this, it was hard to pick a DVD Pick of the Week. Sure, the two spotlight films on this week's list, Shut Up and Sing - Buy from Amazon and The Prestige - Buy from Amazon, are great, but the DVDs leave a lot to be desired. So were the two Canadian entries, Trailer Park Boys - Buy from Amazon.ca and C.R.A.Z.Y. - Buy from Amazon. In many ways Gandhi - Two-Disc Special Edition - Buy from Amazon was the best choice on this week's list, but I'm going with Trailer Park Boys - Buy from Amazon.ca (and I also recommend the massive box set as well). You may call this is a result of a pro-Canada bias, and you would be right. But at least I'm up front about it. More...

A Cut Above the Rest

October 24th, 2006

Running With Scissors ran away with the crown on the per theatre charts, earning an average of $28,264 in its 8 theatres. However, with reviews that are less than impressive, it could have serious troubles expanding. The Nightmare Before Christmas 3D opened in second place with $3.3 million in 168 theatres for an average of $19,506. The only other film to crack $10,000 was The Queen with $15,253 during its fourth week of release. More...

Sound as Science

September 26th, 2006

The Science of Sleep started its theatrical run atop the per theatre charts with nearly $350,000 in 14 theatres for an average of $24,852. The studio hopes to expand the film into 200 theatres this weekend but it is too soon to tell if the film will be able to attract an audience outside the art house circuit. Second place went to American Hardcore as the documentary took in $18,102 in its lone theatre. Next up were a pair of holdovers with Old Joy earning $17,556 in one theatre, which is more than it made during its entire, nearly month-long release. Finally, Keeping Mum fell just 25.67% to just over $20,000 in 2 theatres for an average of $10,077. More...

Mum's the Word

September 19th, 2006

After struggling nearly everywhere it played, including its native U.K., Keeping Mum led the way on the per theatres charts with an average of $13,556 in two theatres. This could be enough for it to earn some measure of mainstream success, but that's far from guaranteed. The U.S. vs John Lennon opened with nearly $70,000 in 6 theatres for an average of $11,524, which was just ahead of the only holdover to top $10,000, Man Push Cart with $11,002 in its lone theatre. High quantity on sites this week, but many of them were for new releases, most of which haven't had any updates in a while. Those that did have updates were generally quite small, but one site stood above them all, Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny - Official Site, which is easily the winner of the Weekly Website Award. Limited Releases Sure to Spark Conversation

September 15th, 2006

It's a tough week for limited releases, not because there is a lack of quantity or quality, but because of nature of the films, many of which are difficult to talk about without potentially offending readers. This is because there are a quartet of documentaries that deal with political matters. One of them, Jesus Camp, even combines politics and religion, which is a sure path to flamewars. While that film is surely the most contentious, it is also the best reviewed film of the week and the controversial nature could help it become the biggest hit. More...
