DVD Releases for December 30, 2008 - Part I

December 29th, 2008

This week is a mess because we are dealing with DVDs released on the 26th, the 27th, and the 30th. Additionally, we are dealing with the latest two waves of Paramount Blu-rays, so there are a lot of spotlight reviews this week. (Although when it comes to those particular Blu-rays, I have previously reviewed nearly half of them previously, and I have seen more than half of the rest, so it was easy to review.) It was so easy, in fact, I was able to get a couple reviews done in advance, which lead to a record number of spotlight reviews. There are more spotlight reviews this week than the previous four weeks combined. Needless to say, the column had to be split into two, with the second part found here. As for the best of the best, Serenity - Blu-ray easily won the DVD Pick of the Week, while Duckman - Season Three and Four is the DVD Pick of Next Week. Also worth grabbing are Event Horizon on Blu-ray, Ghost Town on either DVD or Blu-ray, Greek - Chapter Two, and The Truman Show on Blu-ray More...

Momma's Big on Home Market

May 20th, 2006

DVD Releases for May 2, 2006

May 1st, 2006

At first glance, there's not a lot coming out this week that seems award worthy. There are a few releases that I'm looking forward to, most notably Red Dwarf - Series 8 and The Red Green Show - 1997 Season, but while I'll be picking them up, I can't recommend them enough to give either of them the DVD Pick of the Week. Nope, that honor goes to The Tennessee Williams Film Collection - Buy from Amazon. More...

Under Climbing Up World Charts

March 19th, 2006

A number one opening in France, as well as a slew of smaller debuts, pushed Underworld: Evolution into sixth place on the international charts with $4.98 million on 1473 screens in 20 markets for a running tally of $36.12 million after nearly two months in release. In France the film earned $1.84 million on 346 screens while it managed the same feat in a trio of Asian markets: Taiwan with $600,000 on 75 screens, Malaysia with $310,000 on 45, and Hong Kong with $290,000 on 25. Interestingly, the original was banned in Malaysia. More...

International Charts - Memories haven't Faded Yet

March 12th, 2006

A fourth place, $1.63 million debut on 250 screens in France helped Memoirs Of A Geisha leap up the charts this weekend. Overall the film finished in sixth place on the international charts with $3.98 million on 1723 screens in 47 markets for an international total of $88.34 million. The film placed higher during its opening in Finland with $79,000 on 12 screen over the weekend and $95,000 in total while it had to settle for ninth place in Belgium with $200,000 on 29 screens. Underground has Sky High Debut

January 23rd, 2006

Nearly every film in the top five beat expectations over the weekend, which helped soften the post-holiday drop-off to just 3.9%, and push the overall box office to $121 million. The weekend was up a massive 23.2% over the same weekend last year. Year-to-date, 2006 has overtaken 2005 by 2%, which is even more impressive when you remember that 2005 got off to a strong start. However, as history shows us, it is far too soon to tell how well this year will go. More...

New Releases go Underground

January 20th, 2006

Just the one real wide release this weekend, but there are three other films either opening or expanding into what some might consider a wide release. Only the one film has any shot at the number one spot, and two might not even make the top ten. More...

Road to Glory

January 17th, 2006

It was a very close race over the Martin Luther King long weekend, with the top three separated by just over $1 million over the 3-day weekend. However, the overall box office was still down 1.7% from last weekend and 9.0% from last year. Year-to-date, 2006 is still off to a strong start, but it's too early for those numbers to mean much. More...

First Long Weekend of the Year

January 13th, 2006

It's another busy weekend with four wide releases, but unlike last week, none are earning terrible reviews. Of course, none of these films are being championed by the critics and none look like they will be runaway hits at the box office either. Still, it should be a close contest for top spot with several interesting races along the way. More...

2006 Preview: January

January 2nd, 2006

It's the beginning of a new year, January 1st, 2006 (or at least it was when I wrote this). The good news is 2005 is finally over. The bad news is 2006 again starts with the month of January, which is always a really slow way to start the year. This is a real dead month when it comes to new releases, in fact, of the 10 new releases coming out this month, I'm excited about seeing... none. (There are a few movies that could be popular among their target demographic, but I'm just not in those groups.) But at least there are a few Oscar contenders that opened in limited release last month that are looking to go wide sometime during the month and that is the only real saving grace. More...

New Upcoming Movies

October 12th, 2004

A number of upcoming movies have been added to the site. Most noticeable of these new movies are a spin-off to the X-Men movies: Wolverine, Michael Mann directing a Miami Vice movie based on his own eighties television series and a sequel to last year's surprise hit The Italian Job, Italian Job 2.
