DVD Releases for June 3, 2008

June 3rd, 2008

This was a bad week for big movies, with not a single first run release is even worth rating a solid purchase, never mind being a contender for DVD Pick of the Week. There were a few other contenders for the title, including Dirty Harry Collection on DVD or Blu-ray. However, I found it impossible to decide which format was the better deal. Had the Blu-ray provided anything more than High Definition, or been a more reasonable price compared to the DVD, it would have been an easier choice. One of them is the DVD Pick of the Week, I just don't know which one. On a side note, there is an immense flood of Blu-ray releases, including a few I thought were coming out previously. More...

December 12th, 2006

While the number of DVDs coming out this week isn't has high as last week, there is still a high level of quality with several contenders for DVD Pick of the Week, including The Devil Wears Prada - Buy from Amazon and World Trade Center - 2-Disc Commemorative Edition. However, the clear winner was James Bond - Ultimate Edition, both Volume 3 and Volume 4. More...

International Details - Devil Drops Out of Top Five

November 26th, 2006

Late numbers for the international weekend meant there was a shakeup in the top five with Saw III trading places with The Devil Wears Prada. Saw III took fourth with $6.54 million on 1912 screens in 20 markets for a total of $37.18 million. Meanwhile, The Devil Wears Prada fell to sixth with $5.87 million on 2452 screens in 23 markets for a total of $172.54 million. It was also the first time in nearly two months that the film didn't place in the top five on the international box office. More...

Desu Noto 2, a.k.a., Death Note 2: The Last Name held on strong adding $5.12 million on 397 screens in 2 markets for a two week total of $20.85 million. In Japan the film remained in top spot with $4.66 million on 346 screens for a two week total of $19.34 million. More...

Desu Noto 2, a.k.a., Death Note 2: The Last Name opened in two market last weekend taking in a total of $7.29 million on 393 screens including finishing first in Japan with $6.50 million on 342 screen over the weekend and $10.33 million in total. In the mean time, the film opened in second place in South Korea with a respectable total of $1.37 million, which includes more than just the weekend, obviously. More...

International Details - Partying on the International Charts

November 5th, 2006

Barnyard: The Original Party Animals saw impressive growth this week up 52% to $4.26 million on 2035 screens in 20 markets for an international total of $16.58 million. The film opened in a handful of markets including placing first in Mexico with $927,000 on 310 screens, but that's a little low for this type of film in that market. Also, it missed the top five in Spain opening in sixth place with $651,000 on 220 screens. The film's biggest market of the weekend was the U.K. where it was down just 27% to $1.41 million on 446 screens over the weekend for a total of $5.66 million after two. More...

International Top Five - Prada Passes Milestone

October 26th, 2006

It was a $100 million weekend for The Devil Wears Prada as its $18.6 million haul lifted its international total to $104 million. The film's only opening of note was Sweden where it topped the charts with $606,000 on 66 screens. Most of the film's box office this weekend came from holdovers like Italy where it was down a tiny 7% to $3.33 million on 420 screens over the weekend for a total of $8.50 million while it held on nearly as strong in Germany down 21% to $3.36 million on 598 million for a two week total of $9.23 million. The film still has openings in South Korea and Japan, although I'm unconvinced the film will be a hit in either country. But the film has already earned twice what it needed to show a profit, so the studio has no reason to complain regardless of what happens from now on. More...

International Top Five - Prada Still a Powerhouse

October 18th, 2006

The Devil Wears Prada remained on top of the international charts as it added $24.61 million on 4217 screens in 42 markets. This lifted its international total to $75.43 million and its worldwide total to $199.75 million. Germany was the film's biggest market as it took in $4.24 million on 559 screens, but a local film kept it out of first place while another local film did the same in the Netherlands where it opened with $631,000 on 80 screens over the weekend and $816,000 in total. It did earn first place in Italy with $3.56 million on 417 screens and in Taiwan with an estimated $1.2 million on 98. Meanwhile, the film performed amazingly in several holdover markets adding $3.47 million on 446 screens in the U.K. to its two-week total of $12.53 million while it remained in first place in France with $1.9 million on 507 screens for $10.1 million after three weeks. As for further milestones, the film has obviously already crossed $200 million worldwide and $100 million internationally won't be far behind. More...

International Top Five - The Devil You Say

October 11th, 2006

There was not a single new release in the top five, for that matter, all five films were in the top five last weekend as well. However, we still had a surprise number one as The Devil Wears Prada claimed the crown with $19.37 million on 2975 screens in 33 markets for a total of $42.16 million so far. That is almost 60% higher than it earned last weekend. Almost all of this growth can be attributed to the film's first place, $6.11 million opening on 447 screens in the U.K. but the film also took first place in Russia with $2.32 million on 299 screens and in Spain with $2.15 million on 301 screens. As for holdovers, it remained in first place in Australia down just 27% to $1.88 million on 321 screens and now has $7.02 million in the market while it fell 35% in France to $2.99 million over the weekend and $7.63 million in total. Comedies tends to be very cultural and usually they don't translate well. Perhaps the experience of having a bad boss is universal, (not that I would know anything about that), or perhaps the film's darker edge it helping it overseas. More...

International Top Five - Trade a Worldwide Hit

October 4th, 2006

World Trade Center had its widest expansion of its run so far an that helped it climb into first place in a very tight race. Over the weekend the film made $12.83 million on 2765 screens in 19 markets for an international total of $22.55 million after three weeks of release. The film opened in three major markets including its biggest markets, the U.K.. There it was in a close, three-way battle for first place but in the end it finished third with $3.12 million on 411 screens. The film also placed third in Germany with $1.68 million on 496 screens. In Spain, on the other hand, it handily took first place with $2.40 million on 325 screens and also finished first in Taiwan with $734,000 on 57 and in second in Brazil with $618,000 on 85. Next up for the film is Australia and Japan this weekend, as well as a series of midlevel European markets. More...

International Top Five - Sweet Smell of Success

September 27th, 2006

The German film, Perfume: The Story of a Murderer, was the surprise winner at the international box office, taking in $10.79 million on 1,600 screens in 6 markets for a total of $31.62 million. Its best market remained Germany where it was down just 32% to $6.72 million on 773 screens; that was half the total box office in Germany, more than four times its nearest competition, and enough to lift its running tally in the market to $20.22 million. The film also managed to top $1 million during its second weekend in Russia (first place with $1.59 million on 310 screens for a $6.43 million total), and in its debut in Italy (third place with $1.05 million on 335). The film opens in France next weekend, in Spain at the end of November and in the U.K. at the beginning of December. One must assume the studio is happy with its run so far. However, with a production budget of 50 million Euros (about $65 million American), it is the most expensive German film ever and will need a strong run in several non-German speaking markets to show a profit. International Top Five - Little Man a Big Deal

September 24th, 2006

Little Man shot up the charts into sixth place with $5.97 million on 1597 screens in 23 markets for a total of $22.63 million internationally. The film had million dollar debuts in both Spain, ($2.06 million on 250 screens), and Mexico, ($1.04 million on 352), while came reasonably close in Russia, ($960,000 on 217 screens, including midweek numbers). In all three markets, the film placed second on the charts. More amazingly is the film's performance in the U.K. as it dipped just 17% to $1.05 million on 315 screens over the weekend and a three-week total of $5.75 million. More...

Invincible Tops Tepid Weekend

August 29th, 2006

As summer slowly winds down, there was the predictable decline from last weekend's box office. In total, ticket sales managed $102 million, down 7.9%, but more importantly up 4.6% from the same weekend last year. Year-to-date, 2006 is still ahead of 2005, but the lead has shrunk to 5% and we will need a strong fall season to maintain overall ticket sales growth. More...

New Releases Look Anything but Invincible

August 25th, 2006

The final weekend in August looks better than most, with one or two films that should finish with overall positive reviews. However, the box office potential for these films is very limited. It looks like Invincible should live up to its name, and if not, look for plenty of bad puns come Monday. I know I've already thought of a few. More...

Snakes Can't Compete with Hype

August 22nd, 2006

The weekend box office was surprisingly subdued given the amount of hype the number one film was generating. Overall the box office made $110 million, which was down 14.9% from last week and 3.5% from last year. The week-to-week decline is to be expected at this time of year, but the year-to-year drop-off is more troubling. Even so, 2006 is still maintaining a 6% lead over last year's pace and that's well above ticket price inflation. More...

DVD Releases for August 15, 2006

August 14th, 2006

It is another insanely busy week with 1,250 DVDs coming out, at least according to Amazon. However, like last week, the majority of those are episodes of Charlie Rose. (I really wish the studio released them as full season sets and not flood the market with individual titles that most people will skip over without a second thought.) Three releases immediately jump out as the best of the best, Apocalypse Now - The Complete Dossier, Masters of Horror - Dario Argento - Jenifer, and The Simpsons - The Complete Eighth Season - Collectable Maggie Head Edition. I could have spent hours trying to determine which of those was the best, but instead I will just award all three the title of DVD Pick of the Week. More...

Movie Website Updates for August 5 - August 11

August 11th, 2006

The torrid pace of website updates continues with more than 30 films on this week's list. There were a few sites that really caught my eye, but it was Trust the Man - Official Site and its interactive map of New York City and its more than 2 dozen clips that won the Weekly Website Award. More...

Movie Website Updates for July 29 - August 4

August 4th, 2006

2006 Preview: August

August 1st, 2006

July finally brought us the year's first truly monster his with Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, but outside that film, most of the month disappointed. With August being a bit of a dumping ground for films that didn't work out, the weakness in the box office should continue. Add in a few surprise hits last year and 2006 may have trouble keeping up with last years pace. More...

Movie Website Updates for July 22 - July 28

July 28th, 2006

Another big week for movie sites with several excellent entries. In this crowded field there were a lot of sites that showed promise and could be just one big update away from winning the award. But this week the best of the best was World Trade Center - Official Site. Let's hope that the movie can live up to the site. More...

Movie Website Updates for July 15 - July 21

July 21st, 2006

Another busy week, but unlike last week there was no massive blockbuster launching its flash site. Two sites stood out this week, (not counting past winners), and they are wildly different both in terms of style and in terms of the movie they are selling: Accepted - Official Site and World Trade Center - Official Site. The former is goofy and seriously immature, while the latter is one of the most emotional sites I've ever seen. In was nearly a coin flip, but in the end I went with Accepted - Official Site, but I would be willing to bet the other site will win before the movie comes out. More...

Movie Website Updates for July 8 - July 14

Movie Website Updates for May 20 - May 26

May 26th, 2006

Movie Website Updates for May 13 - May 19

May 19th, 2006

It was a good week for movie sites, although it's hard to tell looking just at the number of sites featured here. However, while the numbers of sites is low, the quality is very high with three sites in the running for the Weekly Website Award, (four if you include Casino Royale - Official Site, which I preemptively gave the award to when the placeholder site went live). Both The Break-Up - Official Site and Pulse - Official Site were also in the running, but in the end I went with See No Evil - Official Site. However, I expect the other two sites to win the award in later weeks. More...

Movie Website Updates for May 6 - May 12

May 12th, 2006

There's a better than average selection on this week's list, but for the vast majority of the sites, there are only minor changes. The best of the bunch is Click - Official Site but there are a several other sites on this week's list that are just a update or two away from being an award winning site. More...

Movie Website Updates for April 14 - April 20

April 20th, 2006

Another slow week and either I've lost my mojo for finding new and updated sites, or this is the calm before the storm that is the summer box office season. And speaking of Storm, the best of the bunch this week is X-Men: The Last Stand - Official Site. More...

More...

DVD Releases for December 12, 2006

More...

International Details - Box Office is Far From Dead

November 19th, 2006

Desu Noto 2, a.k.a., Death Note 2: The Last Name held on strong adding $5.12 million on 397 screens in 2 markets for a two week total of $20.85 million. In Japan the film remained in top spot with $4.66 million on 346 screens for a two week total of $19.34 million. More...

International Details - Death has a Noteworthy Start

November 12th, 2006

More...

More...

July 14th, 2006

It's a good week for website with what could be the last big hit of the year launching its flash site. That movie, Miami Vice, and its Official Site, is the winner of the Weekly Website Award. More...

Movie Website Updates for May 20 - May 26

May 26th, 2006

Not much this week in terms of new sites or updates and all the ones that are award-worthy have already won the weekly website award. The best of the rest is The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift - Official Site, but it certainly doesn't deserve to win the awards. More...

More...
