Synopsis

Over the course of one Broadway season (2003-2004), “ShowBusiness” follows four high-profile productions that eventually become Tony Award® nominees: a lavish musical prequel to “The Wizard of Oz” named “Wicked;” the Rosie O'Donnell/Boy George collaboration, “Taboo;” the highly anticipated Tony Kushner/Jeanine Tesori musical, “Caroline, or Change” and an irreverent musical with puppets, “Avenue Q.”

From casting to staging, from previews to red-carpet opening nights, from the announcement of Tony nominations to the suspense-filled Tony Awards, “ShowBusiness” provides a never-before-seen look at the inner workings of Broadway musicals. Allowed unprecedented backstage access, director Dori Berinstein casts a camera's eye on rehearsals, backstage dramas, and the mysteriously wondrous creative process.

“ShowBusiness” was an International Documentary Association (IDA) Distinguished Documentary Award Finalist and a feature finalist for Best Documentary of 2006. “ShowBusiness” also won the Best Documentary Feature Grand Jury Prize at the 2006 Florida Film Festival.

In 2004 “Caroline, or Change” played at the Ahmanson Theatre to rave reviews and just won the prestigious Olivier Award for best musical. In February of this year “Wicked” opened at The Pantages for an open-ended run, with many shows sold out even before tickets went on sales to the public. Now journey through the season that propelled these shows (as well as the creative forces behind them) into the public eye.
