DVD Releases for April 22, 2008

April 21st, 2008

It's a slow week by nearly every measure: big releases, overall quality, overall quantity, spotlight reviews, etc. This is great news for me since recently a package arrived with several DVDs, all of which were late. I'm not quite completely caught up, but I am very close. As for this week's releases, there were only a handful of releases that were even in contention for DVD Pick of the Week. Both The Savages - DVD and The Orphanage - DVD or Blu-ray earned excellent reviews, but their home market releases were only average. Cloverfield - DVD wasn't as good a movie, but the DVD had the best combination of movie quality and special features. The specter of a Blu-ray release notwithstanding, it is the DVD Pick of the Week. Contest - King of the Box Office Prognosticators

April 4th, 2008

The widest release of next week should be Street Kings, and it is this week's target film. In order to win, one must simply predict Street Kings's three-day, opening weekend box office. Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going over, will win Lions for Lambs on DVD, Jimmy Carter: Man from Plains on DVD, and Steep on DVD. Meanwhile, whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going under, will also win Lions for Lambs on DVD, Jimmy Carter: Man from Plains on DVD, and Steep on DVD. Entries must be received by 10 a.m., Pacific Time on Friday to be eligible, so don't delay! More...

DVD Releases for March 25, 2008

March 24th, 2008

According to Amazon, there are more than 700 DVDs coming out this week; however, this is certainly a case of quantity over quality and I'm having trouble finding 30 releases worth mentioning. It is also a rather light week when it comes to spotlight reviews with only three of them. To end the trifecta of weakness, there are not a lot that are even in contention for DVD Pick of the Week. War Made Easy is arguably the best movie of the week, but the DVD is devoid of extras. Likewise, Bonnie and Clyde on Blu-ray is a good choice, but there are no exclusive features and the Ultimate Collector's Edition has more physical features. Another contender was PTU - Police Tactical Unit, which is a strong movie with equally strong extras. However, in the end none of these releases really lived up to the title of DVD Pick of the Week. Devil's Far from Dead on the Per Theater Chart

October 30th, 2007

Before the Devil Knows You're Dead opened in first place on the per theater chart with an impressive average of $36,919 in two theaters. Pete Seeger: Power in Song and Wristcutters: A Love Story were well back but still strong with averages of $11,945 and $10,506 respectively. While those were the only three films to creak $10,000 on the per theater chart, two others came very, very close: Saw IV at $9,977 and Blade Runner at $9,915. More...

Movie Website Reviews for Weekend of October 26, 2007

October 27th, 2007

Only two wide releases this week, and while there were many more limited releases, there weren't many sites that stood out and demanded to be given the Weekly Website Award. In fact, there were more movies released this week without site than were released with sites that were merely above average. The best of this humble group was Dan in Real Life - Official Site, and it's the winner of the Weekly Website Award. More...

Giving the Devil His Due on Halloween

October 26th, 2007

Despite being a busy week for limited releases, only a couple of them are earning the overwhelmingly positive reviews that limited releases need to survive the demanding art house crowds. In fact, there are more earning less than 50% positive than there are earning 80% positive, which is generally the number I use as the minimum needed to survive in limited release. More...
