DVD Sales - Sexy, and Not so Sexy, New Releases

October 6th, 2008

New releases were plentiful on the sales chart this week, but after the new number one release, they were not that strong. That new release was Sex and the City, which sold 1.72 million units raising $38.56 million in opening week revenue. More...

DVD Sales - Go Speed Racer!

September 29th, 2008

There were plenty of new releases on this week's sales chart, nine in fact, but they generally didn't perform as strongly as last week's group. Leading the way was Speed Racer with 406,000 units sold, and $8.40 million in revenue generated, which is relatively better than its theatrical run. More...

September 29th, 2008

There were almost as many new releases to reach the top 30 on the rental charts as there were on the sales chart this week, but there were some key differences, including the top spot. DVD Releases for September 16, 2008 - Part I

September 15th, 2008

We have a big list this week with more than 50 releases. This includes very few top-notch, first run releases, but that weakness is counterbalanced by the strength in the TV on DVD department, including a few contenders for DVD Pick of the Week like Duckman - Season One & Two and Pushing Daisies - Season One on DVD or Blu-ray. If I were to choose just one release this week, it would be the former; however, I think the latter has a better chance at mainstream appeal. As I previously said, this is a huge list this week, so much so that it had to be split into two parts. Part two can be found here. More...

International Details - Sex not as Popular with International Audiences

June 8th, 2008

Sex and the City made its international debut this past weekend, and while it wasn't able to top the charts like it did domestically, it still managed a fantastic $32.77 million on 3590 screens in 14 markets over the weekend for a total of $37.52 million. Its biggest opening came in the U.K. where it dominated the market with $17.22 million on 460 screens, which is equivalent to an $80 million to $100 million opening here. It also finished first in Germany with $7.41 million on 836 screens. It also did very well in France with $6.12 million on 551 screens and in Italy with $2.74 million on 552 screens, finishing second in both markets. The film opened in Australia and South Korea this past weekend, while it doesn't end its run till late August with Japan and it should reach several major milestones before then. More...

International Details - What Happened to Speed Racer?

May 18th, 2008

Like it did domestically, What Happens in Vegas... managed to open in second place on the international charts. It was able to do so in part because it opened in nearly every major market over the past weekend earning solid openings in many of them. This includes second place in both the U.K. ($2.47 million on 398 screens), in France ($2.36 million on 304 screens), and in Australia ($2.33 million on 335). It also placed first in Spain with an impressive $3.77 million on 398 screens and also topped the charts in both Russia and Germany with $3.70 million on 476 screens $1.85 million on 500 screens respectively. Overall it managed to pull in $24.86 million on 3904 screens in 36 markets during its opening weekend on the charts, and should have little difficulty matching its domestic total. More...

Hot Mama

April 28th, 2008

The last weekend before the summer blockbuster rush turned out to be a positive one with only one film missing Thursday's prediction. This helped the overall box office to $91 million over the weekend, although that was 4% less than last weekend. More importantly, it was 17% more than the same weekend last year and that helped reduce 2007's lead over 2008 $2.66 billion to $2.59 billion. More...

Jet Li and Jackie Chan Team Up to Take Over the Box Office

April 22nd, 2008

New releases were able to match expectations at the box office this weekend, for the most part, and there were hardly any surprises overall. This led to overall box office revenue of $94 million, which is about 1% lower than last weekend. However, it is also 6% higher than the same weekend last year, which ends 2008's four-week losing streak. Year-to-date, 2008 is still behind $2.47 billion to $2.56 billion, but we will take every little bit of good news as it comes. More...

Jet Li and Jackie Chan take on Sarah Marshall

April 17th, 2008

We are getting closer and closer to the first weekend of May, and the unofficial opening of the summer blockbuster season. Because of this, studios are getting more and more reluctant to release a major film and the best most films coming out this weekend can hope for is a midlevel hit. However, while there is no obvious first place film on this week's list, that does mean we should have a close race for the number one spot and at least that should generate some interest from box office watchers. 2008 Preview: April

April 1st, 2008

April is not a good month to release a movie. In fact, it is one of the worst months to release a movie, especially late in the month as the May mega-releases begin to loom large on the horizon and you don't have a lot of time to pull in some cash before summer starts and the competition becomes too much to handle. There are, however, a few limited release this month that have a real shot at expanding. Where in the World is Osama Bin Laden? could reach $10 million, which would be amazing for a documentary, but it is doubtful it will expand wide. More...
