DVD Sales - Meet the New Number One

July 15th, 2008

Meet the Browns led all new releases on its way to capturing the number one spot on this week's sales chart. However, its opening week sales of $8.75 million from 474,000 units were not strong to say the least and were behind the $10.64 million in sales generated by Vantage Point. It is important to note that the latter film sold only 407,000 units and only earned more thanks to a higher per unit price. More...

DVD Releases for July 1, 2008

June 30th, 2008

Another week without a marquee first-run release, but that's not surprising given the time of year. There are a few releases that were contenders for DVD Pick of the Week, including two TV on DVD releases: 30 Days - The Complete Second Season - Buy from Amazon and Mad Men - Season One - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray. Both are worthy for different reasons, and if I were forced to pick one, I'd probably just flip a coin, so I might as well award them both the DVD Pick of the Week. More...

International Details - Goodbye to the Top Five

April 27th, 2008

Bienvenue Chez les Ch'its, a.k.a. Welcome to the Sticks, remained in first place in France with $4.79 million on 867 screens over the weekend for a total of $175.67 million after 8. However, it fell out of the top five internationally with $5.33 million on 963 screens in 4 markets for a total of $187.13 million. In its native market, the film has ticket sales of 19.25 million putting it about three weeks away from topping Titanic's record of 20.64 million while it is closing in on $200 million internationally. Both of those are amazing records, and the film is hardly showing signs of slowing down. More...

April 20th, 2008

Nim's Island made its first push onto the international chart landing in sixth place with $4.53 million on 970 screens in 7 markets for a very early total of $5.64 million. The film opened in first place in Italy with $1.71 million on 304 screens while it expanded into fourth place in Australia with $780,000 on 196 screens over the weekend for a total of $1.69 million after two. The film also made its debut in France with $1.65 million on 399 screens, which was only enough for fifth place. Nim's Island is using a graduated release schedule and doesn't have a major opening for the rest of the month. On the other hand, it has major openings practically every month right through till the end of summer. More...

International Details - Step Up Falls Down and Out of the Top Five

April 6th, 2008

Step Up 2 The Streets fell more than 40% last weekend while dropping out of the top five. This was mainly due to the lack of major openings, while its holdover results were merely average. In the U.K. it was down 42% to $2.74 million on 351 screens over the weekend for a total of $11.32 million and in Australia it was down 44% to $1.31 million on 188 screens lifting its total to $5.10 million after two. International Top Five - B.C. Stands for Big Cash

March 19th, 2008

10,000 B.C. climbed into first place on the international charts with $38.65 million on 6,569 screens in 48 markets for a total of $74.43 million in just two weeks. The film opened in first place in Russia with $3.99 million on 536 screens and in the U.K. with $3.92 million on 431 screens while it also scored first place in South Korea with $3.13 million on 401 screens over the weekend and $3.56 million in total. It wasn't able to top the charts in either France nor Italy, but had to settle for second place with $3.39 million on 562 screens and $2.91 million on 454 screens respectively. As for holdovers, it held on very well in Mexico, down 28% to $2.98 million on 467 screens over the weekend for a total of $9.16 million. It wasn't as strong in Australia where it fell by more than 50% to $1.01 million on 221 screens over the weekend and $3.83 million in total. 10,000 B.C. will hit $100 million very shortly, but it cost $105 million to make, which will make profitability troublesome. Who Helps End Slump

March 18th, 2008

The slump is over after four weeks. During the weekend, the overall box office was $121 million, which was 12% more than last weekend and 3% more than the same weekend last year. Paradoxically, 2008 slipped behind 2007's pace when it comes to ticket sales, albeit by less than 1%. More...

International Top Five - Audiences Welcome International Movies

March 12th, 2008

Bienvenue Chez les Ch'its remained in first place in France, and internationally. In its native market it earned $28.68 million on 840 screens over the weekend for a total of $73.48 million after just two weeks. At this pace it should hit $100 million by this time next weekend, which is an amazing milestone for that market. Add in its two smaller markets and the film made $29.79 million on 905 screens in 3 markets for a total of $75.44 million. More...

Spartans Spank Cavemen

March 11th, 2008

10,000 B.C. may have won the weekend with ease, but it wasn't able to come close to 300. Even if it had, the overall weekend would have still been behind last year's pace. Overall this weekend, movies brought in $107 million, which was 10% more than last weekend. However, it was a massive 30% lower than the same weekend last year. 2008 still has an advantage over 2007 at $1.67 billion to $1.61 billion, but ticket sales are now nearly identical. More...

Tens of Millions on its Way to 10,000 B.C.

March 7th, 2008

February ended on a disappointing note, and there are signs March could start off the same way. This time last year, 300 opened with an outstanding $70.89 million, a feat no film is likely to match this month. In fact, it is very, very unlikely that the three wide releases this week will earn that much combined. More...

International Top Five - Tres Bien

March 5th, 2008

The French film, Bienvenue Chez les Ch'its, opened over the weekend and it performed tres bien, which means very well. ... I think. I may have just said something rude in French. (On a side note, it was one of four such films to chart this weekend, although it was the only one to reach the top five. We will get to the other three on Sunday.) It set records in its native market earning $31.67 million on 793 screens over the weekend for a total of $36.58 million including previews. Overall it pulled in $32.53 million on 838 screens over the weekend for a total of $37.40 million while its per screen average or $38,816 was the best so far this year. For a film that reportedly cost just 11 million Euros to make, which is about $16 million American, this is a fantastic opening. Even if it had a larger than average P&A budget, it is likely that the film has already shown a profit. More...

Semi-Pro Throws Up an Air Ball

March 4th, 2008

Good news, 2008 is still ahead of 2007's pace by a substantial margin. Bad news, the lead is shrinking. Over the past three days, overall box office earnings were $97 million, which was 12% lower than last weekend. More importantly it was 22% lower than the same weekend last year. 2008 still has an 8% lead over last year, $1.54 billion to $1.43 billion, but at this pace, that lead won't last until the end of the month. International Details - Juno Heads North

March 2nd, 2008

Juno nearly climbed into the top five with $7.08 million on 1745 screens in 25 markets for a total of $39.17 million. This includes a surprise first place opening in Brazil with $808,000 on 146 screens over the weekend and $1.26 million in total. On the other hand, it struggled in South Korea with $222,000 on 203 screens over the weekend and $283,000 in total. As for holdovers, the film was down just 7% in Mexico to $454,000 on 150 screens over the weekend for a two-week total of $1.37 million while it added $2.11 million on 368 screens in the U.K. for a total of $13.41 million there. The Pros of Cons of the Movie Business

February 28th, 2008

Wide releases are rather limited this week with only one film debuting in more than 3,000 theaters while the other two are opening in barely more than 1,000 each. Overall, the new releases do have a lot more strength than last weekend, but not compared to last year. In fact, all three wide releases combined might not earn as much this weekend as Wild Hogs opened with last year, which is bad news for a market that is starting to slip in the year-to-year race. More...

Point has the (Ad)Vantage

February 25th, 2008

It was a rather predictable weekend with none of the films missing or beating expectations by huge margins. This led to $110 million in overall box office takings, which was down 21% from last weekend and 6% from the same weekend last year. It is not time to panic as 2008 is still leading 2007, but after a couple weeks of declines, the margin has been cut to 9%. More...

Movie Website Reviews for Weekend of February 22, 2008

February 23rd, 2008

Only nine movies were releases this week, and there were only six sites to review (not counting the one that crashed my browser). Point has a Clear View of First Place

February 21st, 2008

There's only one truly wide release this week, but there are three other films aiming for a spot in the top ten. This means there's not much of a battle for top spot, and there will likely be a sizable drop-off at the box office. And even with last year showing some weakness during the weekend, it is not likely that 2008 will get back to its winning ways. More...

2008 Preview: February

February 1st, 2008

2008 got off to a faster than expected start with January helping the year to a 17.5% lead over 2007. It seems unlikely that February will be able to keep up that pace, but there are still enough releases that most avid moviegoers should find something to get excited about. Granted, this is partially due to the combination of the lead year and February 29th landing on a Friday. This means we have five weekends in February this year, something that only happens approximately once every 28 years, which explains the number of films. More...

More...

DVD Rentals - Point to Vantage

July 15th, 2008

More...

International Details - Island Scores Solid Sixth in Debut

More...

International Details - 10,000 Scores a Solid Sixth Place

April 13th, 2008

No new openings left 10,000 B.C. tumbling from second to sixth, but it still pulled in $5.83 million on 4302 screens in 61 markets for a total of $155.16 million. This is substantially more than it made stateside while it is about a week away from $250 million worldwide.

Overall it added $7.38 million on 1615 screens in 27 markets for a total of $53.21 million, which was enough to lift its worldwide total to more than $100 million. More...

More...
