DVD and Blu-ray Releases for February 23rd, 2010

February 23rd, 2010

We're still in that no-man's land for the home market: it's way too late to take advantage of the Christmas shopping season and it's still too early for most Awards Season releases to be on shelves. There are a few wide releases coming out this week, but only one of them, The Informant!, is worth buying on either DVD or Blu-ray. The best release of the week, and the winner of our Pick of the Week honor, is The Damned United, which is worth picking up on DVD or Blu-ray. Meanwhile, Trailer Park Boys: Countdown to Liquor Day - Blu-ray earns the coveted and rarely-awarded Puck of the Week. More...

Whatever Really Works on the Per Theater Chart

June 23rd, 2009

Whatever Works led all releases on the per theater chart this weekend, earning $266,000 in 9 theaters for an average of $29,574; however, given its mixed reviews, I'm a little doubtful about its chances to expand over the coming weeks. The overall box office leader, The Proposal, also reached the $10,000 plateau with an impressive average of $11,004, while the re-release of Brighton Rock was the only other such film at $10,626 in one theater. More...

Movie Website Reviews for the Weekend of June 19th, 2009

June 20th, 2009

Not a good week for movie websites, as the best of the best (Year One's Official Site) only manages to be above average for a wide release and without enough wow factor to rise to the level of the Weekly Website Award. More...

Whatever Limited Releases Work

June 20th, 2009

Not a big list of limited releases this week, and it includes two-releases, two Canadian movies, and two movies that I thought was opening last week. (I think I just got the dates wrong last week, which I believe is a sign of senility.) There are a couple films that look promising, but none look likely to expand truly wide. More...

Torino Grand on Per Theater Chart

December 17th, 2008

Gran Torino opened on top of the Per Theater Chart with an outstanding average of $45,287 in six theaters. Wide expansion seems inevitable at this point. Likewise, Doubts debut of just over $500,000 in 15 theaters gave it an average $33,815 making expansion almost assured. Che - The Argentine was close behind with $30,535 in two theaters. The Reader opened with an average of $21,006 in 8 theaters, which most weeks would be enough to score top spot; however, given the competition, without continued success during Awards Season, it could struggle to expand. There were only two holdovers in the $10,000 club with Frost/Nixon earning an average of $16,061 and Slumdog Millionaire earning $12,873. The final $10,000 film was Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, which opened with $10,985. However, both My Name Is Bruce and Wendy and Lucy came relatively close with averages of $9,119 and $9,109 respectively. More...

Movie Website Reviews for Weekend of December 12, 2008

December 14th, 2008

One of the busier week's in a while when it comes to new releases, and there's a mix of wide releases and smaller Oscar hopefuls. It's the former category that has the best sites, with the widest release of the week, The Day the Earth Stood Still, having the best Official Site. On a side note, we also have a previous winner of the Weekly Website Award, Delgo - Official Site, and since the format of this column has changed since then, that will be the last time that happens. All Signs Point to Awards Season on Limited Releases

December 12th, 2008

Another week, another group of Awards Season hopefuls are being given a limited release. This week we have four films that have already earned nominations, plus a couple others that might later on. Of these, none are guaranteed to walk away winners, but I would be surprised if all of them were shut out. More...
