DVD and Blu-ray Releases for January 12th, 2010

January 11th, 2010

As it is usually true at this time of year, there are very few major releases hitting the home market this week. Most of the films on this week's list that opened wide were critics and / or box office disappointments, but at least there are a number of smaller films to pick up the slack. This includes Big Fan, which features what should be a star making performance by Patton Oswald, but the DVD isn't exactly loaded with extras. That's not an issue with Moon, as both the DVD and the Blu-ray are loaded with extras. The best release of the week is arguably The Hurt Locker and both its DVD and Blu-ray are Pick of the Week material. However, it is likely that it will be joined by Transformers - Season 2 - Volume 2, once the screener arrives. More...

Awards Season - Precious and Station Lead Independent Spirit Awards

December 2nd, 2009

As always, the Independent Spirit Awards represent the unofficial start of Awards Season with the announcement of their nominations. This year The Last Station and Precious topped the list of nominees with five each. For the former, it should help build buzz for its 2010 release. For the latter, it is the first step towards possible Awards Season glory and further enhances its already lofty box office potential. More...

Staying Up on the Per Theater Chart

June 9th, 2009

Two new releases cracked $10,000 on the per theater chart this week, including Away We Go, which led the way with $32,603 despite mixed reviews. The overall number one film, The Hangover, was second with $13,759. Perhaps most impressive was Up, which remained in the $10,000 club during its sophomore stint with $11,561. It's rare for a saturation level release to repeat on this chart. More...

Movie Website Reviews for the Weekend of June 5th, 2009

June 6th, 2009

There were three wide releases to crack the top ten this weekend, but when it comes to the best of the websites, it's a smaller Canadian movie that was the best. Waterlife's Official Site had a surprising amount of sound and animation to go with the impressive information and it is the winner of the Weekly Website Award. More...

Hoping Limited Releases Don't Go Away

June 5th, 2009

The latest attempt at an independent sleeper hit opens this week with Away We Go. Sadly, it doesn't have reviews that inspire confidence, but hopefully it can beat expectations. That's the biggest release of the week, but there are also a couple of documentaries that are worth checking out. More...
