Our DVD and Blu-ray sales estimates are based on weekly retail surveys, which we use to build a weekly market share estimate for each title we are tracking. The market share is converted into a weekly sales estimate based on industry reports on the overall size of the market, including reports published in Media Play News.

For example, if our weekly retail survey estimates that a particular title sold 1% of all units that week, and the industry reports sales of 1,500,000 units in total, we will estimate 15,000 units were sold of that title. The consumer spending estimate is based on the average sales price for the title in the retailers we survey.

We refine our estimates from week to week as more data becomes available. In particular, we adjust weekly sales figures for the quarter once the total market estimates are published by the Digital Entertainment Group. Figures will therefore fluctuate each week, and totals for individual titles can go up or down as we update our estimates.

Because sales figures are estimated based on sampling, they will be more accurate for higher-selling titles.

Full financial estimates for this film, including domestic and international box office, video sales, video rentals, TV and ancillary revenue are available through our research services. For more information, please contact us at research@the-numbers.com.

DVD Sales - Furious is Selling Fast

August 13th, 2009

On the one hand, there were a lot of new releases that charted this week. On the other hand, not a lot of them were particularly strong in terms of units sold. But that doesn't include Fast and Furious, which sold 1.72 million units and generated $27.90 million in consumer spending at retail. More...

DVD Rentals - Not a Fast Week for New Releases

August 13th, 2009

While there were five new releases to reach the top 30 on the rental chart this week, only one of them reached the top ten. That new release was Fast and Furious, which placed first with roughly two thirds more rentals than Watchmen. More...

DVD Releases for August 4th, 2009

August 3rd, 2009

A rather slow week for new releases with very few real first run releases that stand out. The best releases on this week's list are Dollhouse - Season One on DVD or Blu-ray, as well as Watchmen - Three-Disc Director's Cut Blu-ray, but both of those came out in weeks past and are on this list because the screener arrived late. The best from this week is Flight of the Conchords - Season Two, which is the DVD Pick of the Week. However, if you are Canadian, you have to grab Nothing Too Good for a Cowboy on DVD; it's your patriotic duty. More...

DVD Releases for July 28th, 2009 - Part I

July 28th, 2009

We are starting to see the flood of TV on DVD releases that hit the home market this time every year. It makes sense: after all, what better time to release the previous season on DVD than just before the next season starts? Three such releases, The Middleman - The Complete Series, Battlestar Galactica - The Complete Series - Blu-ray Box Set, and Dollhouse - Season One - on DVD or Blu-ray are in contention for DVD Pick of the Week. The Battlestar Galactica release is a tad too expensive for most people, while I am unsure of the exact nature of the extras on Dollhouse. That leaves The Middleman - The Complete Series as the DVD Pick of the Week, for the second week in a row. With the increasing number of TV on DVD releases, the list is large enough that it has to be split into two parts with part two found here. More...

DVD Releases for July 21st, 2009

July 20th, 2009

Two of the most anticipated home market releases of the summer come out this week, and both of them are contenders for DVD Pick of the Week. The Watchmen and Coraline Blu-ray releases are both worth picking up, and must-haves for their fans. Also in the mix is The Middleman - The Complete Series, which despite its short run packs a lot of entertainment. If I were forced to choose just one to buy, it would probably be Coraline, but all three are DVD Picks of the Week. More...

International Details - Blame it On Rio

May 3rd, 2009

OSS 117: Rio Ne Repond Plus slipped a spot to sixth with $4.74 million on 642 screens in 3 markets for a total of $15.15 million. Almost all of this came from France, where it repeated on top with $4.03 million on 602 screens over the weekend for a total of $12.83 million after two. More...

International Details - Japan Rising Sun on International Chart

April 26th, 2009

Japan was a major player on the international charts this past weekend, placing three films in the top 30, and helping a couple others as well. Detective Conan: The Raven Chaser placed first in its native market, and sixth internationally, with $6.00 million on 341 screens. More...

Seventeen + $24 Million = Number One

April 21st, 2009

As spring draws to a close, and studios sweep out the potential misfires, the overall box office numbers slip in anticipation of Wolverine. Actually, the overall box office was better than expected at $108 million over the weekend, but that was still 18.8% lower than last weekend. More importantly, thanks to 17 Again's stronger than expected start, it was 15.8% higher than the same weekend last year. Year-to-date, 2009 has earned $2.91 billion, which is 17.2% higher than last year's pace. I'm not sure it will be able to maintain this pace over the summer. In fact, I'm nearly 100% sure it won't. That said, the year has built up a sizable lead, and as long as the summer is merely average, we should go into the fall with higher ticket sales. More...

International Top Five - Slow Reports

April 16th, 2009

Easter delay was a little bigger than anticipated; in fact, we still don't have full numbers. (Hopefully they will arrive before the weekend for the International Details column.) We do know that Fast and Furious climbed into first place with $45.88 million on 5118 screens in 54 markets for a total of $90.93 million after just two weeks of release. This includes a first place, $7.26 million opening on 364 screens in the U.K., while it also placed first in Russia with $8.60 million on 689 screens. Meanwhile in France it pulled in an estimated $6 million on 500 screens, but its placing was not known. As far as holdovers go, the film was down 52% during its second weekend in Germany, but still added $2.89 million on 618 screens over the weekend for a total of $10.45 million after two. Mexico wasn't that far behind adding $2.07 million on 455 screens for a two-week total of $8.84 million. More...

International Details - Marley Nears Century Mark

April 12th, 2009

Marley & Me fell to sixth place, but it is nearing $100 million internationally. This past weekend it added $5.97 million on 2860 screens in 33 markets for a total of $83.34 million. The film opened in second place in Italy with $2.00 million on 348 screens, which is on par with expectations. Meanwhile, it added $1.23 million on 464 screens in the U.K. for a total of $18.41 million after four weeks while it made $1.01 million on 439 screens in Japan for a total of $5.17 million after two. It is still aiming at $100 million internationally, but it could be close. More...

Movie Website Reviews for the Weekend of April 10th, 2009

April 12th, 2009

Summer can't come soon enough as there was not much in the way of top notch movie sites this week. In fact, there was only one site that was above average, Hannah Montana the Movie's Official Site, and even there is was barely above average. More...

Will Hannah be a Sweet Treat over Easter Weekend?

April 10th, 2009

Easter long weekend is not a major holiday at the box office; in fact, the best Easter opener is Scary Movie 4 at just over $40 million while number two is Panic Room at just over $30 million. There's little chance the record will be broken, but Hannah Montana the Movie could open in first place over the weekend and in second place all time, while it should do its part to keep 2009 ahead of last year's pace. More...

International Details - Duplicity Doubles

April 5th, 2009

Duplicity doubled its international haul over the weekend landing in sixth place with $6.47 million on 1811 screens in 20 markets for a total of $12.21 million. The film opened in fourth place in France with $2.01 million on 380 screens, while it managed fourth in Russia as well, but with a much weaker $873,000 on 265 screens. It did hold on better than most in the U.K. down just 31% to $775,000 on 355 screens over the weekend for a total of $2.68 million after two. More...

2009 Preview: April

April 1st, 2009

April is a transition month. At the beginning it is strong, but as we near May, the looming competition is just too great and that scares away the big-ticket releases. That said, there are still a few films that could reach the century mark this month, and it does look stronger than last April and that will help 2009 extend its lead in the box office race. More...

International Details - Watchmen Slowing Down

March 29th, 2009

Watchmen fell out of the top five with $6.35 million on 4965 screens in 53 markets for a total of $60.63 million. Unless it is a big hit in Japan over the weekend, $100 million internationally is likely out of the question, as is $200 million worldwide. Depending on how much it costs to advertise, it could still make enough to show a profit, but it could take quite a bit longer than the studio would have liked. More...

International Top Five - Marley Retrieves Top Spot

March 18th, 2009

Marley & Me jumped to the top of the international box office pulling in $14.14 million on 2559 screens in 29 markets for a total of $49.01 million. Its best market was the U.K. where it opened in first place with $6.15 million on 467 screens, while it placed second in Russia $1.58 million on 517 screens over the weekend for a total of $2.04 million. As far as holdovers go, the film managed $2.04 million on 550 screens over the weekend for a total of $5.72 million after two. Meanwhile in France, it earned $1.29 million on 354 screens over the weekend for a total of $4.11 million, also after two. The film opens in Spain this weekend, Japan next weekend, and Italy the weekend after that. More...

More...
