DVD and Blu-ray Releases for June 15th, 2010

June 14th, 2010

As it usually this time of year, the selection of first run releases on the home market is rather weak, with only one certified hit: The Book of Eli. That's not to say there are not a lot of interesting releases, as we have many summer TV series hitting the home market ahead of their premieres. However, looking for the Pick of the Week we have to dig deep to find a mostly undiscovered gem: Mary & Max. Both the DVD and the Blu-ray are worth buying, but the latter is the better deal. More...

Featured DVD Review: Happy Tears

June 11th, 2010

Happy Tears was written and directed by Mitchell Lichtenstein, whose first feature was Teeth, a movie I really liked. I wasn't alone in that opinion. It earned amazing reviews, but struggled at the box office. This film did worse in both regards, but is it a true sophomore slump, or was it unfairly judged and overlooked? More...

Ghost Haunts the Top of the Per Theater Chart

February 24th, 2010

Showing once again that there's no such thing as bad publicity, Ghost Writer topped the per theater chart with an average of $45,752 in four theaters during its opening weekend. It will be interesting to see if it can maintain this momentum going forward. Shutter Island was the only other film in the $10,000 club, earning an average of $13,729 in nearly 3,000 theaters on its way to the number one spot on the overall chart. More...

Limited Releases on the Defensive

February 19th, 2010

Oscar night is approaching, a fact which has influence on both the most significant limited release of the week, and the relative weakness of limited releases in general. It would be hard to argue that 2010 Oscar Shorts is not the biggest release of the week, but the most interesting release might be Defendor. More...
